I am hearing music I never heard before, the sound stage is much broader with individual placement of the instruments in the orchestra, a clear, rich bass.
so well together that music already sounds beautiful, well-defined, butter-smooth midrange, deep, fast, powerful, clean bass and clear, non-fatiguing highs
The 95 sounds like heaven to these ears: intricate, gentle treble, transparent mids, and punchy, tuneful bass

Blueray video looks terrific, quite a bit better than my old player.
The video on both is excellent and the audio from the Oppo my be a tad more detailed, I'm not sure, but the Oppo is somewhat curtailed in deep bass output, needs to be EQd about +7dB below 100 Hz; if you want to use EQ, and hardly any audiophiles do anymore.
I am an audiophile and wanted great video performance with world class audio

I called Oppo customer support (they answer the phone and are very informative) and they tell me they still support their earliest products with parts and service
This product is best in class for video and audio quality.
Readers of this review need to interpretate my words carefully, since my audio equipments are of the very top end products, the listening session is conducted with my own audio system (with Antelope DAC Gold, Master clock and 10M atomic clock)
Did a quicky comparison tonight between my old but beloved Esoteric P-10->Illuminati->PS Audio SL3 & the BDP 95
I will most likely sell my unit and switch to a faster and more bug free product

I have not watched a great deal of movies yet but previewed The Dark Knight Rises on Bluray in DTS-HD Master Audio thru HDMI and was equally impressed, though I know the BDP-93 would sound just as good since I was using my preamps DACS to convert

that I prefer two channel stereo sound over surround sound and have always preferred the warm expressive sound, imaging, and dynamic range of a good vinyl recording over digital sound.
The dynamic range which has always been one of the sore points for CDs in my opinion is wonderful and the sound stage is as alive as anything I've heard on vinyl.
Both players produced amazing images, with great dynamic range from the brightest whites (in the snow capped mountains) to the shadow detail under the houses in the floating city

20-years ago I spent close to $4,000 on the Theta Digital Processor because I grew up in the 50's/60's on good sound systems from the start, used to vinyl and natural detailed sound.
Every system is good, probably good enough

Unfortunately, this technique doesn't seem to be compatible with the lossless flac files (although the Oppo certainly can if you burn them to disk or have a thumb drive) but I *am* able to convert those to high bit rate mp3s, and the sound quality is completely acceptable, almost indistinguishable from the CDs themselves.
The sound quality was definitely better than my old player, but only to a minor degree and the bright, somewhat harsh sound I've come to associate with CDs was still present
I listen to a lot of Bluray concerts and movies; the sound and picture quality are great
Even though i am using the low end video processor, the unit still produces the best picture quality I've ever had in my home on both dvd & blu
I consider these all bonuses though and the outstanding sound quality is why I rank this buy 5 stars.
I don't have a fancy audio setup, I just use the stereo outputs, and the sound is astonishing
I thought they produced a good sound until I heard this Oppo.
But the great sound coming out of this device, which can be the d/a converter for all your digital audio and video, coupled with its best-ever networking capacity, make it a huge step on the path to full central home audio and video at your fingertips
I use it as a CD/SACD player it is far superior to the Marantz I used for many yearsAn outstanding sound

I thought the PS3 was already a very great bluray player but this Oppo BDP-95 is a very very very great cd & bluray player!
Of course, with a bad CD or file the player will show all the faults, but with the good stuff, the 95 oozes music
In particular the blueray player I've had connected to my Denon PMA 2000IVR has always sounded terrible playing CDs.
The unit allows CDs to sound remarkably warm and musical.
The interface for playing high res files from USB sticks and hard drives is fine for me (not that iTunes would not be nicer)
Two other notes: in theory you can network the device with the right kind of hard drive, although again this involves a computer or some other way to sort through directories
I've also been discovering the wonders of high res music files on a USB Flash drive; the Oppo will play music in 4 different ways: by disc, USB, E-sata (hard drive), & streamed over a network
Your only easy option is to connect an external hard drive or USB memory stick
There seems to be some thought that an advantage to playing files with a USB port is a reduction in timing jitter due to the lack of a spinning disc (or hard drive).I haven't done much redbook cd listening due to time constraints
