This is an over-the-ear design, which actually does a great job of still sealing to the ear, with no major pressure, as opposed to around-the-ear closed
After having used this headphone in several moderate to loud noisy environments, I can definitely say that the NC is doing a very good job and to me enhances my music experience in a positive way

Whenever I ride on a bus (one of the places it is most convenient to have noise canceling headphones), whenever there is a bump, there is a sharp squealing noise that comes from the right side of the headphones

Another nice thing about the AKG NC is the passive mode where the NC is off - the headphones themselves provide great sound and can be used as a normal headset

I would have rated these 2 stars for the fact that they ARE comfortable for long periods(so long as I never have to put them around my neck)... except the bad things about these when you consider the high price tag are just too much.
When I turn on the noise cancelling feature, things are even worse, with a low level hum all the time.
Not the worst thing in the world, as they are still good headphones, but you buy these as your NC set
