Love the tap tempo feature with foot pedals that both Alesis drum machines have
The SR-18 does not have this cool feature either, the sounds are good, lots of cool presets but drum machines still have a very long way to go before I will get too excited, I thought this was supposed to be an upgrade. ?
I believe this to be the best sounding drum machine made today for the price, it is fairly simple to program, has the most real sounding drums has a nice fill feature
The ability to import sounds to extend the ROM package would be a nice feature in this day and age where a few gigs of flash ram costs a few dollars

I bought this after selling a Boss 670 drum machine that had really funky, Loud and unusual drum patterns (had great tone, clearity, rich sound) that I could never figure out how to do anything with it, other then change tempo, volume and a/b pattern switch
Alesis SR-16 is probably the most affordable drum machine on market, if I am not mistaken.
As a musician that really doesn't care for playing with others as well as just a electronic-instrument enthusiast I decided on grabbing a drum machine rather than dealing with another person and their hefty drum kit when I started a band a few years ago
In the end the better sounds of a good drum machine, while not always as organic as you'd like still lead to a better sounding demo most of the time compared to live drums in a home demo situation.
Still a great product if your'e looking for a portable drum machine with up to date sounds.

Great sound quality, and it have "old school" battery sounds that enable you to rock!!
Sound quality was awesome and it was easy to program beats on it.
Comparing the SR-16 to newer products: Rhythm machines produced by Roland/BOSS, Yamaha and ZOOM are the SR-16's primary competition, with Roland and Alesis often cited as leaders and innovators in pro electronic percussion (these companies also produce the best quality electronic kits and the same samples are used in their rhythm machine products)
Amazing quality of sounds & programming for a "vintage" piece of equipment
I set it up using PC speakers through the headphone jack, which limits the quality but is all

Zoom has a little better sounding bass, but ill record my own real sounding bass with a real bass ....both can be used in your studioThe output is rather weak using line outs
you play one of the pre programmed beats, and hit MUTE, then the thing you want cut out, in this case the BASS, since some of the beats sounded really good, I wanted to take the bass out to just start jamming over drum sounds
I don't like the bass and sounds on the included drum beats, since some of them sound good, but you have a silly bassline dictating the key,
Drums sounds are top notch – bass sounds are decent and work fine for me.

Why couldn't you just give us the same great functionality of the SR-16, but with better sounds?
are some great drum pad sounds, and a much better electronic drum selection
I was thrilled when i first got it, however the sound was not working at all
it doenst save very well, seems once saved, the original is there forever... but still one can create patterns you can save in in cubase, magix or samplitude or another recording program once youve done your program to be sure except for future tempo changees could be off and funny sounding
Great sounds they are very authenic and the machine is very versital

You can program a song beat for beat or jam along to the many cool patterns they have
don't plan on being able to create intricate drum patterns, you will be lucky to make simple, rudimentary beats and timings
The drum sounds themselves are a bit unrealistic but the programmers created VERY usable pattern styles
It has excellent drum sounds, plenty of cool drum patterns, and many usable drum kits

I do recommend this unit for its sampled sounds, but be prepared to fight, claw, and wrestle this beast to the ground
I'd recommend this unit to anyone who wants something more interesting to practice timing with or if you need a "phantom drummer" ; this could easily fill in for a small gig.
I used it for about a week and the unit stopped working, no places around me could fix it at a reasonable
My older unit which I had to replace never had any issues

But the SR-18 is just about worthless in that role.
I have a Sr-16.. great machine, just needed more depth and variation with the presets
If, like me, you used the SR-16 for practice, for extending a jam while your lead guitarist got his act together, for a quick simple beat that did the job most of the time.
I didn't like the SR-18 at all
In my home studio, the SR-18 simplifies things because I use it for drums on most demo tracks, rather than going through the enormous set-up time required for miking acoustic drums.

To sum up, this is a great self-contained drum machine that gives you a lot of power, flexibility, and good sound for a not-ridiculous price
The only plus of this unit is the price, but anyway not very usable
the price , great to have item that exceeds its value ,
Also check out the new SR18, just released April 2008, although twice the price is the downside for the extra drum set samples, more memory and bigger construction.
While the quality of the unit has only improved, the price has dropped as computer parts have become less expensive (also newer units are mass produced in Asia).

Here are some of the weird things:Genres not grouped together.
But, if you just want to make some beats that sound really nice, keep them in your bag, and not get all complicated, then this thing is great.
Nonetheless I love this thing, and I refer to it as "My drummer, Tom".
Number 1, if you are a guitarist who has to jam alone a lot, you are going to absolutely love this thing because of the fact that you can get some really nice drum and bass going on at the same time.
