Bought this for a Christmas gift & hoping they will love it, well made & great price.
I ran across this at the William Sonoma outlet for a great price during the Easter sale
We searched all the top brands (with outrageous prices to boot) and settled on the All-Clad
I first came across this kettle about six months before I purchased it, and spent that time considering the purchase and searching (with no success) for another all stainless steel kettle with good reviews at a reasonable price
I am willing to pay a premium for All-Clad products because the quality truly merits the price and they (well, most items) are made in the USA
I rinse it every week in vinegar, which temporarily removes the buildup, but after the next boil it's as bad as before
Its a well made and quality kettle with the same lifetime guarentee as the US made ones
This explains the pour quality and workmanship … not to mention the questionable quality of Stainless.
The quality of the stainless steel is excellent as always, though.
The pouring spout gets super-heated during the boil so that when pouring it causes the water to re-boil as it comes up the spout, spattering boiling hot water in all directions (again, where the wooden spoon handle helps)On the rare occasion that the whistle does work, it's pretty feeble, and inaudible over the stove's exhaust fan, so you pretty much have to watch the kettle while its on (which of course results in a watched pot never boiling).2 stars for looks, capacity and heat retention (but if minor burns is your kink, then you could tack on a couple more stars).
Sturdy, heats water, holds heat, easy to clean, looks pretty
This kettle heats the water pretty quickly (I only use enough for 25-40 oz for coffee for my French press)
I simply could not find one that would really last under intense heat and they usually had some sort of plastic for the handle and around the pouring spout (Chantal, OXO).

Later: I contacted All-Clad in Canonsburg, PA and told them of my disappointment with this very expensive tea kettle.
After experiencing the interior rusting of my previous very expensive tea kettle, I spent a lot of time researching this kettle and am thrilled with my purchase.

Very seldom is the handle too hot for me to handle... all around great tea pot.
I gave it as a wedding gift and instead bought the great glass tea kettle that is available here for about 7 dollars and works like a charm.
One has to always use more gear, a potholder, or just wrap one’s own choice of insulation around the handle, destroying the design
Their bottom design contradicts their advertisement which states under Product Features: "Wide, flat bottom for stability and faster heating" and " induction compatible."
I do not care because the design of this kettle is so perfect.
tops! It's a beautiful design and doesn't whistle too loudly.
I consider this a major design flaw and a HUGE drawback.

I love the way it pours flawlessly without spilling a drop.
The connection is seamless to the surface and doesn't make a humming sound the way the OXO one did.
I love the way this kettle looks on my induction cooktop.

I prefer the shiny S/S finish to the brushed finish.
All-Clad has that extra wow factor that turns everyday kitchen instruments into lavish décor.
Now, only a few weeks later, the problem has recurred, plus now we are noticing tarnishing (yellow/gray discoloration) on the exterior
My only gripe: slight discoloration (TINY) on the outside near the bottom
So the kettle boils water about as fast as you can boil water in a quality sauce pan

In comparison, a quart of water took 3 minutes and 16 seconds to come to a rapid boil in a Demeyere 2 quart sauce pan.
It seems that the spring activated lid has warped and will not close downproperly on the spout and thus there is no whistle when the water boils.

I was almost put-off by some reviews that reported (A) having to use a pot holder to pour your hot water, and (B) the whistle not working when the water boils
no matter how I place the lid on the kettle, it rocks on the opening, instead of fitting tight, and lets out a lot of steam when the water boils, thus frustrating the whistle.
I would use the hot pad anyway since you have to grab the handle to flip the whistle (which is hot) up when the water boils, so I don't see a problem there
