My only concern is whether the adhesive might damage the surface or be hard to remove, but I deemed it worth the risk.

The instructions were actually stuck to the sticky surface and had to be torn off that surface which should have been protected by another product other than the paper instructions.

The rubber sole is just fine for keeping the holder still on the dash without having to use the sticky-surface option.

The car I took didn't have a totally flat surface...very, very slight bump, but this gadget, which is not only lightweight, but doesn't damage your car with icky goo adhesive, stayed secure...and we traveled close to a tornado...true story

It's a shame, because again, everything else worked as it should, and for the price, it's hard to beat, but there appears to be a reason for the price.
