Sadly this is my first negative review for Apple.

I could go on and on about the underwhelming performance of the remote (just read the critical reviews), but you should also know that the Apple TV box can and does get very hot

i am not sure where all the negative reviews came

Basically, everything stated in the critical reviews happened to me with this piece of trash remote
