It's simply safer and more accurate for me to do it free hand.
Although I am effective free hand honing chisels and plane irons, this guide renders more consistent results allowing me to polish the whole ground edge, which holds sharp longer and brings pearing to a cleaner and safer standard
Plane irons and chizels, you can try to hold the angle free hand
I been free handing my chisels, and after using this on one of
I tried free hand sharpening first on some cheap chisels and got decent results
Works great, I didn't know my chisels were in such bad shape, wrong angle.
Perfect for holding my chisels at the correct angle for sharpening.
It did not work out well, sanded the blade at a horrible angle
Because of the convenience and the ability to get a consistent angle on the cutting edge I will always use this guide for sharpening my chisels and planet blades.
A honing guide is indispensable for getting the right angle when sharpening chisels and plane blades, and this simple honing guide works well.
The ATLIN Honing Guide does a good job of securing chisels for sharpening
This honing guide makes for a reproducible and reliable aid to do an excellent job of sharpening your chisels
I have used a grinder or a Dremel to do a mediocre job
Does a very good job holding larger chisels at correct angle
This did an excellent job on my plane iron but because of the notches meant for paring chisels leave very little 'flat' surface on the inside jaw faces above the guide rods, it does a miserable job of holding a mortising chisel in a consistant orientation
very clear instructions for use, a little bit trickier to set up the angle for the blades, very easy solved by making a stop block with the distances required for the diferent angles set up.
The instructions in the package explicitly discourage this sort of tuning, because the tool doesn't need it and could be damaged by it
The Atlin guide is very easy to use and pretty darn accurate; the instructions are very good
Ignore the instructions on where to place a bevel or bench chisel in the guide
They also mailed a PDF of instructions just in case I lose the instructions in the package
It is a honing guide indistinguishable from several others on the market
The guide is pretty straight forward, and it works well with chisels and plane blades
This is a very useful honing guide that I have used once
For my mortise and pairing chisels this guide works great for both
I ran into a problem with my 1/4" chisel - it was difficult to get it seated properly and stay there while tightening, and the guide was difficult to keep from wobbling on the stone.
