-- I didn't see that feature on a lot of more expensive units -- they just lock so you can't open top and bottom drawers as once to avoid tipping (this unit has that feature as well).Note: I saw someone here asking how to open the drawers given the lack of apparent handles

The top, small dent aside, is solid and doesn't flex under light pressure, so you could put things on top of it (although nothing heavy just given the overall lightweight construction of the unit)

only thing is the key to lock it is a little goofy, but not a deal breaker, very sturdy.
