it is pretty much universally agreed among Hams that there is no better value in Ham radio than the Baofeng line

BUT, for the price, a better antenna than the stock antenna, remote mike, these little radios are fair to good value, recharge quickly, and very light communications to carry

This is no Kenwood or a Yeasu radio to be sure, but for the money it is an incredibly good value.

You won't find a better value for a portable ham radio anywhere.

It does not have great range and the MHz is very limited

I would also recommend the Baofeng AA battery pack since this is a rechargeable battery product.

My first such radio, which I still have, is a Yaesu VX6, which is a more durable radio if you go out in the rain or back country, but for around the city, the VX6 is no more useful in than the much cheaper Baofeng UV5, at least for the simple repeater or simplex

Great little radio for the price, although this first thing I would do when you get the radio is get a better antenna.

What I found is the NA771 is a good antenna, but no better than the Expert Power in fact the EP antenna was a little better at picking up NOAA whether stations, but it was also only $10, so I would go with the Expert Power if you are looking for a good cheap antenna for this radio

Cool little radio, I put a better antenna on it which improved it's performance.

The only complaint is the antenna and belt clip, I will have to buy a new antenna and the clip cracked just by taking it off my belt but the radio itself works superb.

This is a good unit for emergency communication when out and about.

It's not that it isn't a great unit, but it takes some figuring out how to operate.

The radios are not in the least water-resistant, and aftermarket products targetting the Baofeng are often of very poor quality (AA battery packs, battery eliminators, car chargers, etc)

Once you play around with it for a bit it's really easy to program

Range is next to none - It starts getting a bit hard to hear someone or get signal over 500’ away

The stock antenna is a bit weak, but is easily replaced.

The kids love the little bit of freedom they get as they can go ahead of us at like a museum or a place like that.

It might look a bit ridiculous but you will love having that little boost in signal that makes all the difference in the world.

Yes, it completely fails the FCC spurious emissions tests (not sure how they manage to sell it here, actually!)

While scanning, the backlight stays on unless you program the backlight to be off for waiting, in which case you can't see the screen in the dark unless you either transmit or break the squelch with the MONI

Bot sure if it's a bug or if someone is barley breaking the squelch

You can program your radio, save an image of all the settings each time you make changes, clone the info to other radios (with same firmware), change squelch sensitivity to the static squelch menu settings

Ofen times one is able to break squelch but their signal is lost in the background static, which is indicative of a low power signal.
