This is a terrible cheaply made product with poor QA.

This really is a great little HAM radio, very affordable, and a great value

Nevertheless, I feel the UV-82HP is a good radio and a great value.

Reception is great, works flawlessly with our repeater, and no transmission problems

The range on this thing is terrible for transmitting

The high power function of this radio (approximately 7 watts) allows you to access repeaters with much better clarity and range.

The range is pretty good even in the terribly hilly/steep terrain of our property.

Everyone has been extremely impressed with its performance compared to the more expensive radios as far as range, clarity and ease of use

It has dual talk buttons (though you can disable that feature with software if you just want one)

Trade off in operation compared to uv5r, easier to lock down certain features on this radio but changing between frequency and channel mode more cumbersome plus inserting and removing battery more cumbersome

After finding out why they did it that way, it was apparent this radio is designed for those who want to monitor and talk on two different channels at once, not a bad feature if it could be turned off easily when it wasn't needed.

The features and performance are amazing at this price.

Programming reasonably easy using good cable and CHIRP.The battery fit is not good, have to use a small tool to help get it started when removing it.

Programming with the (sold-separately, overpriced) cable and free Chirp software is a breeze

For programming all channels I used the FTDI Genuine USB programming cable

If you are not a HAM and have worked with similar units and your like me you are probably going need to spend a cozy evening reading the operations manual to tutor yourself on all the stuff this unit is capable of.

The unit programs nice and easy with CHIRP using the almost mandatory programming cable

This unit is a little hard to field program but with the right book you can do it.

It's a cheap unit and little disappointed that I didn't wait a little longer after the price dropped...

Able to monitor local channels and participate in the emergency weather notifications 2M band is awesome

Have used them on Ham bands as well as to monitor fire and police and they work great

Only a wall adapter, battery free with 12V car plug and a strange AAA battery case exists.

Programming manually is a bit tricky at first, but instruction book really helps.

So, this review is probably biased a little bit towards what I've seen in commercial and industrial applications

Get a programming cable with the FTDI drivers, they cost a bit more but work with built-in drivers on Windows

The issues with the UV-5 were not corrected in this variant, but it is cheap enough and is an effective rig in amateur service once you are familiar with most aspects and issues common to the Chinese radios

They blamed the issue on low mic gain

I've been a Ham radio operator for 20 years now, so I have to overlook some issues, such as receiver sensitivity, but every model I've owned has held a charge extremely well

The issue is that these are very cheap screws and fall apart with a single use and some times less

They use some very cheap screws on the back of the radio to retain the clip

One screws fell apart on me while I was installing the clip and is now completely stripped
