i don't have a boss hm-2 lying around to compare it with,but the behringer does the job quite well.
the behringer does the job though, and i recommend it to anyone looking to get that swedish sound without spending 100$+ on a beaten to bits boss hm-2.

It has it's place in the hands of those who are new to guitar and want to play with some cheap effects, don't use much distortion and want a toy, or to drive heavy gain to a cheap solid state amp
Probably a better distortion than most low end solid state amps.
But really, any high gain pedal or amp would capture Jerry's high gain tone just fine, and there are way more versatile pedals out there

For best results, use a tube amp with just a little bit of breakup to push it over the edge into that dirty, nasty, wonderful tone.
At first after a few minutes of use it would get a very pronounced phaser sound coming out, killing most of the muddy metal tone coming in, but that was because a didj't put a fresh battery in
It's scratchy and farty and just completely terrible sounding, but in a way that's potentially useful as a truly creepy/hilarious special effect tone
And this pedal does just that,however i run an overdrive before,and an EQ pedal after it to really get a devastating tone
Don't get the impression this pedal is a shredding pedal and pass it by if you really just want a good 60-80's classic rock tone

Don't get it if you're looking for a normal, versatile distortion pedal or something that sounds good in any conventional sense
For the price, you get decent solid state type distortion.
For heavy metal power chords, this is my number 1 distortion
