One other cool feature - the LED signal level meter doubles as a tube-warmup countdown timer
LED level monitors are highly responsive, giving quick, accurate level readouts
It takes care of the previous LOUD/soft levels, pretty much capping the loud (and yes, it does sound a bit compressed, but far better that than digital distortion).
The built-in limiter is a nice addition, though I prefer to disable it and instead record at safer (i.e. lower) level, adding any necessary limiting and/or compression in post

I did open up the unit to see how easy/difficult tube changes would be, and was impressed by the build quality and design
you buy this preamp, buy a nice ($25 or so) tube from an online tube reseller and put it in for best results
But it reproduces that rich, full, warm tube sound perfectly
With many tube-based mic-pre's, it is common to increase gain before accordingly adjust the output level as a means to force the warm, "tube compression" sound, but with this unit, I would recommend the opposite
I used the stock tube but have not yet tried a better tube
Well the little amp has difficulty keeping up with the more powerful guitar amps without driving it too hard (leading to distortion/muffled sound quality)
I didn't want to go with a bigger, more powerful amp, because I don't want to have to lug around big, heavy equipment
Well the little amp has difficulty keeping up with the more powerful guitar amps without driving it too hard (leading to distortion/muffled sound quality)
With the pre-amp gain control set to almost the minimum setting, and the "output" (volume level) set to the 9 o'clock position, I get more sound out of the main amp with it's settings at 5 than I did with just the main amp set to 8-9, and the sound is SO much cleaner
This is a really good, cost effective preamp that comes stock with an unreasonable amount of hum
Lately, I have been using it to warm up the sound of a low-cost mic, sometimes connected line-in to the same amp, and sometimes to a mixer or direct to a P.A.I have to say that, for me, it works great in both roles
I also tried the slightly fancier Behringer MIC200 but that gave an inferior sound
High end?Eliminates the "dull" sound of standard digital recorders and sound cards

It did brighten up the sound though, it just added noise..
I am recording my classical guitar album with this stuff and to tell you the truth is quiet clean and my alhambra spanish guitar is coming out really good through this unit
the LED's progressively extinguish (R to L) until they're all off
The truth is that they work very well and provide a natural warmth and boost for vocals necessary for recording

You don't have to be an audiophile to hear that this awful device doesn't do any of the things the makers claim it does
I also didn't like having such a noisy device in my signal path.
If you own a decent high end microphone and want it to sound like a five dollar crap toy, by all means, invest in this horrible, horrible device from an otherwise competent manufacturer.
