sound a bit different, so it could just be my gear, but I have to say that while I love this for a tube-like drive for a solid state amp, it sounds cheesy with actual tubes.
you have tube or solid state, if you need some serious Tube Driven Overdrive sound with excellent sustain, this is the pedal you want
I bought this pedal used and have used it with both a Fender tube amp and a Marshall solid state using clean channels
As with any overdrive, this thing will not sound very good (IMHO) running into a solid state amp.

You will be disappointed if you think you can run this into a clean channel and pull off Raining Blood
Adds a little dirt to the clean channel on your amplifier
I bought this pedal used and have used it with both a Fender tube amp and a Marshall solid state using clean channels
It sounds good when used on the top boost amp channel and pushing it even harder, but frankly I think it sounds best when used simply with a good clean tone on the amp
You CAN simply plug into it and use it alone with a clean channel.
Great item plays like charm, The delivery was very fast and before the expected time by 2 days :
However, when im playing classic rock or edgy kind of blues its pretty awesome for solos or boosted little fills
Simmilar to the ibanez tube screamer this pedal "plays nice with others" and can elevate distortion effects and even modulation effects up into something new

You are reading snippets from reviews of Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive
It took my cheap amp and turned it into a bone crushing metal machine
My experience with this pedal is actually a bit different than many of the reviews here; I have primarily used the SD-1 as a distortion pedal with my solid state amp (mid-80's 35W Sidekick Switcher) and a Telecaster with Fender Noiseless pups
I like the Boss Overdrive for fact that it a great booster to your amps own overdrive or distortion
I use it to boost an overdriven amp already, by itself on a solid state and pretty much in any application you can think for it because I like to experiment as a bedroom strummer

Stock, it sounds great, but with the C6 removal mod, this thing is PERFECT
This thing freaking rocks
But if you understand what this pedal is supposed to do and use it for that purpose, you'll understand why this thing has been popular for over 30 years.
It requires a bit of fiddling around to get the right sound you want, but I think that's a good thing since it lets you try out different settings
Modded, this thing becomes an absolute monster of a pedal
I've purchased several Electo-Harmonix pedals and, while they have great sound and are made very well, when they are engaged, they make a very loud "CLICK" sound...not so great when you are at a quiet part of a song and want to prepare for an upcoming change in tone/sound and a "CLICK
This pedal goes from a slight gain to almost a crunch or classic rock sound.
I actually prefer the sound on this pedal to the Tubescreamer as this Boss pedal sounds a little harder edged and nastier than the Tubescreamer in my opinion
its good for a distortion booster more than the overdrive itself but still it can give you a warm sound in the overdrive or a harsh crispy sound just by turning the knobs in different ways....
(Vox AC10 clone) and even though I know that this is MEANT to overdrive a lower volume tube amp, I just don't like the sound
