my other primes (85mm & 50mm, both the lower end) take better quality photos than this thing.
Here are three reasons why:1) Getting-ready photos: These usually take place indoors and likely in small rooms.
This is an excellent lens which gave me the best photos I've made with it's low light abilities
The Hoya (both the digital version and the regular version) works well and cuts UV haze in bright sky photos and such better than other big name brands costing

If landscaping is your thing or you commonly shoot between f/5.6 and f/22, the 16-35mm @ 24mm (actually, the sweet spot on that lens) fared fairly well, but still short, with regard to picture quality versus this lens - these lenses cost about the same.

Sweet spot is f4.5 but that sweet-spot is wide

It's by far my favorite lens out of all of the ones that have crossed my path with the legendary 135mm f/2L USM coming in an equally solid 2nd.
If you're looking for the best 24mm lens for apertures at f/4 or wider, this is the ticket - albeit a pricey one.
The more I thought about it, I realized that the hefty 70D + EF 24mm f/1.4 would get in the way of me taking the pictures and
Instead I would recommend sigma 35mm f/1.4, which has lower price than 35L but has better performance
As I have said in another lens review, I’m definitely not a Canon fanboy (my Ls all hold their own against Nikon’s counterparts), but this lens might be the best 24mm prime out there at the moment.
I particularly appreciate the colors and the sharpness of these lenses
Sharpness is very good over most of the frame at large apertures.
Low-light ability is great, and it's got good sharpness all around
There are no other lenses offering the complete package this lens offers, which is the unique perspective of a wide fast prime with excellent AF, sharpness and colours
I mention this first because one might be confused as to how to properly utilize a 24mm F1.4 lens.
This lens is sharp, nice colors, nice bokeh, and focuses fast.
Ultimately this issue attests to the fact that autofocus is never 100% accurate with any lens, but I see less misfires with my Canon 50mm f/1.4 and my Sigma 85mm f/1.4 lenses, so the fact that this L lens with a steep L price cannot autofocus consistently is a bit disheartening
I had two images that were taken less than 30 seconds apart; identical settings and locations, yet the L lens image was far sharper with beautiful color saturation and depth
From f/1.4 through f/5.6 apertures, this 24mm prime wins hands-down however - chromatic aberration, contrast, color saturation and (outstanding wow!
Color and contrast are perfect and it focuses fast and sharp in all light.
I made the plunge and dropped $1529.00 down for my first L lens and boy, what a disappointment!
Straight off, the AF is a good quality USM drive, making it faster, more quite (or basically more existent) than many of the competitors
The speed problem is also true of the newer version, but the real problem with both f/2.8 options is the existence of good quality zooms that are as fast (such as 17-55mm options for APSC or 24-70 options) offering very comparable quality, some even with IS and USM

The optical quality is superb and you get the option of opening up to f/1.4.At the end of the day, the only thing holding this lens back is the price
The fastest wide angle lens there is; Superbly sharp and superbly creamy Bokeh
Focusing on the eye will leave you with a blurry nose and forehead, very smooth bokeh).I've used the following Canon lenses and this one tops the list and is now on
All that glass means awesome, wide aperature shots and beautiful bokeh

Great construction, very solid build, complete with rubber gasket
The built with full weather sealing is fantastic as I tend to shoot in the desert a lot
I made the plunge and dropped $1529.00 down for my first L lens and boy, what a disappointment!
It's as well built and sharp as any Canon L lens; all I wanted to throw in here is the focusing performance in low light.

With the TS, you gain some optical quality however - while the EF (this lens) has excellent distortion and aberration control, the TS is nearly distortion and aberration free, a truly remarkable achievement.

Product description
The Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens is a venerable wide-angle prime lens that provides sharpness and impressive performance at all settings
Its large maximum aperture of f/1.4 allows for superb low-light photographs, and its circular aperture and narrow depth of field provide pleasing background blur
It is the ideal tool for photojournalists, landscape and event photographers, and anyone who enjoys taking images from a wider perspective
This version "II" improves greatly over its predecessor with the addition of two high-precision aspheric lenses, which correct aberration including curvature of field and distortion
Chromatic aberration common in wide-angle shooting is also reduced by the inclusion of two UD lenses, which ensure optimum image quality and corner-to-corner detail
The EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM features Canon's near-silent Ultra Sonic Motor (USM), which provides super-fast auto-focusing with full-time manual override
The floating internal focus system also helps maintain high image quality throughout the focal range
FEATURES: SWC (Sub Wavelength Coating) - The anti-reflective SWC (Sub Wavelength Coating) differs from conventional coatings by using a much finer structure, which minimizes ghosting and flaring across the lens surface, regardless of the angle with which light enters or exits
Ring-Type USM Motor - Canon's very best autofocusing mechanisms are in place, permitting full-time manual focusing override without requiring a switchover from AF to MF mode
L-Series - Canon's "L-Series" designation indicates that this lens meets their highest quality standards with excellent color reproduction and edge to edge sharpness
