The last 1/3 of the book caused me to want to grab this woman and shake her silly

That this woman escaped that kind of environment and thrived to the levels she has is truly miraculous

Obviously brilliant woman at the book-smart level, but you find yourself wondering how many PhDs it takes to change a light bulb.

The courage it took to write it, the clear and compelling story lines that HAPPENED to this fantastic young woman, the inspiration that it gives that yes, with enough grit and determination and EDUCATION you can achieve.

There is this relief that I was not born into such an environment, because as a female I would hate being restricted in the way many religious people restrict women

The book also shows that Mormons come in all stripes - there are those like her parents who still imagine themselves in the time of Brigham Young (minus the polygamy), and those like her professors who encourage her, as a young woman, to fulfill her academic dreams

This amazingly strong woman--no survivor in the truest sense of the word--managed to escape the unbelievable home life to become the literary person she is today

It is amazing to see how the author developed during this tragic story into a strong woman and is helping similar cases today.

Loved this book of a Mormon family & told by the only daughter Whois the one character that evolves from the non questioning daughter to an educated & perceptive & intelligent young woman that never looses her love of family & roots even though she no longer accepts her cultural & religious beliefs.

It is an inspiring story of a remarkable young woman who managed to overcome her difficult upbringing.

I should think that abuse as brutal as she described and the family denial will take her much longer to recover from than she describe

Tara’s story might help people to better understand who they are and inspire them to make themselves a fundamental change in their lives, as well as it might help the world, the public opinion, and people in position of leadership to better understand the dramatic lives of people isolated from education and health services

Furthermore, like her old sect, her new religion will reward her so long as she follows its tenets.
