It really works as expected and it is absolutely hassle free
Works as expected and produces good quality video as well
I have owned one for 3 years and use it to copy movies onto my computer, the software is quite simple to use, stable, works flawlessly as expected the only improvement might be to have a hdmi cable input, otherwise no complaints.

What a wonderful way to reclaim video to digital...and very easy to use.
This is probably down to my expectations, but one serious limitation prevented me from using this the way I wanted to: it's not identifiable as a capture source in OS X. Adobe Premiere, Elgato's own HD capture solution, Camtasia, and Photobooth all failed to see the device as a video source
This is a great way to get your old VHS tapes, Cassette recordings, or you old albums onto your computer
Only caveat is that if you try to do other work on your computer, such as modify documents or upload/download files while the device is converting a video signal, static noise can work its way into the recording
it turns out the video files were corrupt in a weird way.
Worked great with an old VHS and laptop, as well as with an old camcorder
I was so skeptical when I ordered this, but it works exactly as I'd hoped it would, and has allowed me to pull many hours of VHS video onto my hard drive to keep forever.
As a working professional in many different fields, I long ago learned that using cheap tools actually costs you money due to missed production deadlines, money wasted on the cheap tool and the need to source another tool that actually works well which takes time and effort.
You can watch it playing on you computer screen as well as in the play back screen on you camcorder.
I had to supply my own cabling between the elgato and my VHS player as well as between the elgato and my min DV camcorder
My last two laptops were incapable either due to capacity or inability to locate a card that fit firewire.

There you'll find options to change the file location it saves to, to save in HD (didn't work well on my slower older laptop), and VIDEO and AUDIO tabs with some other controls/

The ease of use is spectacular, and being able to have all our home videos on our external hard drive (and eventually DVD) is wonderful
Instead, you have to convert the files to another video file like wmv (I used Windows Movie Maker), THEN burn the DVD via Windows DVD Maker.
You do need separate software to burn a DVD, but I already had several options for that (and it worked well).
This does what it says it does however if you want to watch your downloaded vHS tapes on a vcr you will have to use Windows video maker and then the DVD maker to burn after they have been downloaded to the computer, and these are both very lengthy processes as they are downloaded as MP4 files.
Very simple software interface, easy to use, interfaced well with my proprietary Japanese DVD player
I did some research and found that the Panasonic DMR-ES10 DVD recorder can be used as a passthrough on line 1 (also disable DNR digital noise reduction by going to display->video on the remote) to help maintain the signal.
Video is clear and audio is noise free.
BUT when you use the software included to trim the begging of the movie it makes it POP or make a real loud noise when playing it back
Only caveat is that if you try to do other work on your computer, such as modify documents or upload/download files while the device is converting a video signal, static noise can work its way into the recording
It has plugs for both the RCA jacks as well as the S video.
You got options like the super cheap stuff or the stuff over a $100

We've learned from mistakes in the past: for electronic devices it's always best to not go with cheap stuff, to ensure great quality and ease of use
(it only mutes it while you're recording; it will still have the normal sound/volume once the video is recorded to your pc) and keep doing other stuff without it interfering (like browsing the internet, watching movies etc)

Has worked very well in recording our old vhs tapes to hard drive.
I transferred all the videos to an external hard drive to free up space on my computer
My next purchase will be an external hard drive for my computer...
There's a lot of confusing information out there, from FireWire to USB cables (most said it couldn't be done for video transfer), but what seemed promising was A/V to USB transfer
I was able to save the videos to my google drive and external hard drive
Regarding the software; I think it's great that you can set a time limit too; I've captured a lot of video from various sources, and being able to set a "stop" point for analog video means I can start a two- or three-hour capture before I go to bed, then wake up to a captured tape
For example, it can be set to limit the length of the recording on the first screen where you enter the title but, after the video has started recording, you can't change the time limit.
the time limit was already expired

I ended up returning it and sent the tapes out to be put on a DVD. not worth the hassle.
didn't work returned
