so I've reached out to fender regarding a possible replacement

Shortest ones are for the top three strings (high E, B, G) and the taller ones are for the lower three strings

I did notice that these are ever so slightly more loose fitting in the headstock than the original tuners - at least on American Special strats - but once tightened down they feel firmly anchored.

Staggered posts are important when using trem on a Strat because they allow you to get rid of those pesky string trees that kill your tuning stability when using the trem.

So, you need to wind the strings a number of times around the posts in order to get a proper break angle over the nut.
