the distance that I can be away from the camera is amazing

They did not appear to be due to a loose connection, because the pops occurred even after I set everything down

It doesn't sound like radio interference - more like a loose wire or connection somewhere.

I tried every channel and was constantly getting a crunching noise -- the sound you get when there's a loose connection.

Checked the connection into the sound system, no problems there
