The Compass is very unstable, and hard to draw a circle with, or even an arc, as the position of the pencil often shifts
The protractor works fine, but the compass' locking mechanism design is non-functional, and renders the compass non-functional as well.
If you buy this set, buy for the protractor and not for the cheap plastic compass.
We have not had trouble with the pencil not staying in...both the compass and the protractor have held up well to fidgety high school students, intent on seeing what it takes to break them.
It is ok for what you are getting, the compass seems a bit cheap.
