Can't get through some of that steel but was able to keep the family in communication for the most part and the kids had fun with them.

My kids enjoy playing with them in the yard and we used them on a road trip when our friends were in the car behind us, but if you are looking for distance, unless you are in an open field these won't cut it.

They tested up to 1 mile in open area and 3/4 mile in city and still worked very well, planning to go further next time.

Many of these *can* work with NiMH, but if you want satisfactory operation & battery life, and a sure thing, go with the alkaline batteries.

The construction of the plastic and parts looks pretty sturdy, have a great light to view the status in the dark, and so far the range of transmission is good, the farther you go can loose some clarity but still good.
