Can't get through some of that steel but was able to keep the family in communication for the most part and the kids had fun with them.
My kids enjoy playing with them in the yard and we used them on a road trip when our friends were in the car behind us, but if you are looking for distance, unless you are in an open field these won't cut it.
Invaluable as instant communication with one or more grand-kids when we're at a huge flea market, etc. or even Wally World
My kids like to go to the park and I use this to keep in touch with them.

Says it works up to 3 miles, they failed at half a mile
They tested up to 1 mile in open area and 3/4 mile in city and still worked very well, planning to go further next time.
If one gets too far ahead, or wants to talk to us, we're not screaming their names to get their attention, The product says 1.9 to 3 miles

Many of these *can* work with NiMH, but if you want satisfactory operation & battery life, and a sure thing, go with the alkaline batteries.

excellent range (not nearly what is advertised, but that would be ridiculous).
They work great as kids toys for a good price and get better range.
Other low reviews talk about cheap buttons, poor range and overall a poor unit
The construction of the plastic and parts looks pretty sturdy, have a great light to view the status in the dark, and so far the range of transmission is good, the farther you go can loose some clarity but still good.

These radios are very clear with no static, A great price, small and lightweight to hold.
These are inexpensive radios with most of the features of the more expensive models
Of course there was a little confusion, but overall it was very successful - - not much co-channel interference (even with 20 radios on the same channel), and people quickly learned to use the simple radios and enjoyed the experience!
