The foam is rather thin and does not offer much in drop protection but is good for preventing scratches if you toss it into your purse/bag.

It will probably protect the unit from a accidental drop if it doesn't land on a rock with it's screen directly.

I bought this thinking it would fIt perfectly a recently bought 7 inches Garmin GPS, but in contrary the GPS gets loose inside, since this case is somewhat bigger both in length and width.
