Lodge makes a kit for seasoning and cleaning the cast iron and it comes with a silicone handle sleeve.

Cast iron is inherently not very good at heat distribution, but this is as good as any other iron

I hope this doesn't prevent the pan from performing as well as my other, older smooth cast iron.
