  • If you cannot get a hold of Kojima's version this is a poor substitute but better then never experiencing the origin of the now blockbuster Metal Gear series.
  • While not as detailed as Metal Gear Solid (PSX), the original Metal Gear is a game worth playing for fans of the series (to get to experience the origins of the story discussed in later games) as well as for fans of classic Nintendo game.
  • While not as detailed as Metal Gear Solid (PSX), the original Metal Gear is a game worth playing for fans of the series (to get to experience the origins of the story discussed in later games) as well as for fans of classic Nintendo game.
  • To answer your question, no, this is *nowhere* as compelling as the Metal Gear Solid series.
  • However for a taste of the stealth aspect that has now made the Metal Gear Solid series so wonderful, it's interesting to see a sneak preview of a similar type of gameplay on the NES.

Reviews around computer (5.00 of 5)

  • Metal Gear was originally developed for the MSX (a computer popular in Japan and Europe from the mid-80's to early 90's) by famed designed Hideo Kojima
  • Story wise, you are Solid Snake, a rookie member of the elite unit FOXHOUND, your task is to infiltrate Outer Heaven, a fortress somewhere in the South African jungles, rescue fellow FOXHOUND member Gray Fox, and destroy the secret weapon, a super computer dubbed Metal Gear

Reviews around bite (5.00 of 5)

  • The biggest gripe people have with this game is that the boss fight with the Metal Gear is gone, but this didn't bother me one bit, it was not a very good boss fight, you simple put bombs on the feet of the Metal Gear in a certain order, the Metal Gear didn't even move (just sat there and shot lasers straight across the screen), so you aren't missing much in regards to this boss fight being toned down, in the NES version you do see a Metal Gear (albeit not in use) and you blow up a computer containing the technical specs needed to complete the Metal Gear
  • revolutionary 8 bit predecessor of so much of today's gaming conventions.....fantastic piece of vg history!Read books on video game

  • Be prepared to battle hard if you're caught!Basically throughout the game you have to collect card keys, several of them in fact that can be used over and over for a variety of doors, to open new areas while using stealth moves to bypass guards and rescue kidnapped people who provide enough helpful advice to make the adventure at least a little memorable.

Reviews around snake (4.26 of 5)

  • Story wise, you are Solid Snake, a rookie member of the elite unit FOXHOUND, your task is to infiltrate Outer Heaven, a fortress somewhere in the South African jungles, rescue fellow FOXHOUND member Gray Fox, and destroy the secret weapon, a super computer dubbed Metal Gear
  • After his MSX Metal Gear he went on to make the EXCELLENT Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake also for MSX, as America got the series black sheep Snake's Revenge
  • Solid Snake starts off the game with nothing but his bare fists, radio, and he even managed to get his cigarettes
  • It's about Solid Snake who has to find and destroy the Metal Gear itself.
  • Bad Snake!I wish that 97% of the music wasn't the same theme song, but it's a decent/suspenseful one at least.

Reviews around tank (1.54 of 5)

  • As you progress through Outer Heaven you are sent on further missions and must fight ever more difficult bosses (tanks, men with machine guns, etc).
  • Apparently, the only weapon that can destroy the tank are mines.
  • You would think that the people who developed this game could reasonably assume that other heavy-duty weapons other than mines would damage a tank.
  • While not as detailed as Metal Gear Solid (PSX), the original Metal Gear is a game worth playing for fans of the series (to get to experience the origins of the story discussed in later games) as well as for fans of classic Nintendo game.
