Battery backup is great in case you loose AC power.

Stopped alerting, stopped doing anything but sucking power out of the wall

The only added feature that I miss is that the old radio I had could take rechargable batteries and charge them while you had power, jumping to them when you'd lose power – this unit doesn't charge a rechargable battery.
