It was easy to disable the wireless signals for both frequency ranges as well as to change the default password.
I insisted that it's quite obviously an unresolved firmware issue (others have reported similar problems), but Netgear denied this and claimed it must be defective hardware.
Do not buy this router until the fix this firmware issue

I called tech support only to find out that you have to pay for support after your 90 day warranty is expires
What really wasn't good, however, was that the streaming sound through the Auralic was not nearly as good as with the XR500, not even as good certainly as with the older
14 months after buying this ( you know, 2 months after the warranty expired) it just shot craps.
After encountering their terrible customer support, I found that this is standard for Netgear - any google search about Netgear RMA throws up pages after pages of people who were told to purchase phone support for them to honor the warranty.
Their deceptive warranty practices are truly appalling.

Prior to this I would not have recommended this router to anyone who specifically wanted to use the USB ports for external hard drives, but now I'd say I guess it depends on the hard drive and obviously Netgear's list is not the best one to go by
I use the USB to run a backup hard drive for our family PC as well.
It allows to connect one USB 2 GB HDD external hard drive that you can access from anywhere, so media sharing is already available
Turn on the router, unplug the hard drive power, plug in the USB cord, plug in the power... maybe
I like all of the options on the Nighthawk but was sad that our USB hard drive was not compatible.

Great product, I had some dead zones in my house but this router was able to get a strong and reliable signal everywhere.
Easy setup, easy app access, and no dead zones!!
If you're looking for better signal penetration in dead zones in your house, this is not the product you're looking for, but neither is probably any other router.
My daughter, who uses here smartphone for everything, noticed the difference in speed, consistent signal and no dead zones in our 1680 square foot home
It covers my entire 2,800 SF two story house with no dead zones
