Love, love, love this lens!I just love the portraits I get with this lens
If you've got the extra $$ and you need a more specific portrait lens - you wont be dissappointed with the 1.4GIf you want an 85mm for landscape details, travel, portraits, and more general shooting
It is my favorite portrait lens in my bag (on full frame
I don't know why I waited so long, but it is absolutely the best portrait lens available anywhere, better than Canon's 85mm f/1.2
and I do not have a better portrait (head or head and shoulders) lens than this
If you are a wedding or event photographer who often goes from tungsten lit scenes to daylight scenes, you will have to constantly remember to change the AF Fine Tune
I purchased two lenses and both consistently need 5 points of AF Fine Tune in tungsten light on both my D3 and D700
NPS's response to this problem was "Use the AF Fine Tune option as a countermeasure in those lighting conditions
Or expect to add 5 points of AF Fine Tune when shooting under tungsten lighting and then taking those 5 points out whenever you shoot in daylight
The combination of my 85mm f/1.4G and D700 has a slight front-focussing problem that I can't perfectly sort with the camera's dedicated fine tune option.
It is MUCH faster in focus speed performance than the Canon 85mm 1.2 L II though, which can easily be one of the slowest focusing lens I have encountered other than Nikon's 80-400mm VR
I had previously owned the Nikon 85 1.8G, which was good, but the Nikon 85 1.4G is superior
I have owned other 1.8g's the 35mm,and 50mm lenses and think they are amazing, and no need to be at 1.4, but it seems to me(IMO) at the 85mm focal range the 1.4g was worth the step up
I had to go available light, and this thing saved the day! This lens focuses fast, but not as fast as the pro f/2.8 glass.
I bought 1.4g before 1.8g rumors surfaced on internet
The quality of the Bokeh is also simply stunning - super creamy just like it's older sibling, but without the low contrast veiling present in the older design wide open.
But the built quality and the pictures sharpness is worth every penny .
Price was a bit over the top, but the quality of the pictures and the glass makes it worth it.
The 50mm 1.4 that I also own is impressive on its own, but due a combination of its focal length, and probably slightly inferior quality of blades, is a distant second
One the things I have experienced using it wide open (i.e., f1.4) with this lens is that the shallow depth of field can be very thin and any slight movements of the subject will cause the image to lose the sharpness
It needed +20 focus adjustment to get a reasonable sharpness on my D3S, which is too much for its reputation
and it is very critical for me to have enough sharpness in corners (which D can't deliver)
No wonder this is the best DXOMark-ranked lens, it brings out sharpness, clarity, bokeh and colors I never thought possible before
This newer version will work with more cameras and includes the latest coatings which will enhance the sharpness (as if it needed any help there) and flare minimization
Now, with the new 85mm f/1.4G, I get fantastic image quality, plus much better and faster handling - and to me, that makes it worthwhile
For indoor shoots during night time, even with all the light switch on and set the aperture at f1.4, I still need ISO of between 500-1000 to take decently sharp images with my DX
All I have say is WOW, this lens performs so very well, portraits are its specialty and with a f/1.4 it performs very well in low light, being 85mm you do need a bit more space to take that full length shot, but when you do, the image is crisp and clear.
This lens is fantastic, on my Nikon D750 or D800 makes super images
While some (not all) of it can be removed from still images in post (but many times not without degrading the image), it cannot be removed from video
I had previously owned the Nikon 85 1.8G, which was good, but the Nikon 85 1.4G is superior
On 85mm prime, I previously owned both Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D and 1.4D.Whether the f/1.4 both D and G are really better than the f/1.8D, clearly yes.
I have owned other 1.8g's the 35mm,and 50mm lenses and think they are amazing, and no need to be at 1.4, but it seems to me(IMO) at the 85mm focal range the 1.4g was worth the step up
I had previously owned the Nikon 85 1.8G, which was good, but the Nikon 85 1.4G is superior
Yes, it is expensive, and the 85 1.8G is a good substitute if you can't afford the 85 1.4G, but if you can afford it, then you will be highly rewarded with beautiful photos
This is a lens that you can shoot wide open ALWAYS, and hardly ever have to worry about low shutter speeds, bad colors, low contrast, unsharp images etc.(well, if you are not super picky at a professional level that is)
Sharp, looks superb on D4 and D800E.Creamy Bokeh, amazing colors and contrast
This lens's sharpness wide open and stopped down, color reproduction and lack of cromatic aberrations is amazing
Faces (and eyes) are tack sharp, the colors luxuriously warm, and bokeh background pleasingly soft.
It's magical, not just sharp but the colors are beautiful and the bokeh is milk shake creampy
It is MUCH faster in focus speed performance than the Canon 85mm 1.2 L II though, which can easily be one of the slowest focusing lens I have encountered other than Nikon's 80-400mm VR
Even with my inexsistant skills this lens makes pictures with its razor sharp focus and dreamy bokeh worth every penny I paid for it
I had to go available light, and this thing saved the day! This lens focuses fast, but not as fast as the pro f/2.8 glass.
Since you probably will not be using for sports photos, the slightly slow focus is insignificant
Focus is sharp, although a little slow (see YouTube comparison with 1.4D).
One the things I have experienced using it wide open (i.e., f1.4) with this lens is that the shallow depth of field can be very thin and any slight movements of the subject will cause the image to lose the sharpness
I primarily bought it for concerts that I shoot, but I recently had a shoot with a model and thought I would use this lens at f/1.4 for portraits of her to 1.) get very shallow depth of field and see what the "cream machine" reviews are all about and 2.) get the skin a touch softer to avoid some post-processing.
A perfect wedding or portrait lens, focus speed is OK though not as fast as 2.8 zoom lenses
In fact, if you check out the link above, you'll see that Nikon's lens actually provides a shallower depth of field, yet focal points are SHARPER at the same time!!!
The two unique advantages about this lens, shallow depth of field and low light performance, are without doubt
