But for a afforable, decent looking stand, they are a good buy.
and I think they are a good buy but just remember a couple of things.
It took 5 minutes to put these together for $50 a very good buy.
Aside from the good price, the product was very nice and the negative write ups were a concern for me at first but didn't hurt at all buying and installing it.
Since I knew that going in, I still think that buying these stands (discontinued item) was a good buy for forty bucks.
The upper plate is smallish, and works as a decent guide for the size of speaker that is appropriate for these stands
Next, the hole in the top plate for speaker wire is too small for 14 gauge speaker wire, and in the middle of the plate, meaning you will have to put your speaker on top of it .

Yes the hole on the top plate is too small to run the speaker wire through, but I just ran it out back and behind the plastic sheathing on the backs of the stands
Only two complaints here: As other reviewers mentioned, there is a hole in the top plate for the speaker wire to fit through
But small price to pay for the perfect finish to our new entertainment system
I like the height and finish of these speaker stands, but they are in need of improvement
I can see how, if you are careless OR get a faulty product that you could end up splitting the veneer finish....in my case the product came with all parts and all pre-drilled holes intact
The finish and look of these things are fantastic for the price.
The finish is also really good on these... very happy with my purchase so far

Very nice inexpensive stands, but not too sturdy on a thick carpet, otherwise good product especially for the price.
However when I started reading reviews about the assembly and splitting of the stand I began to wonder what is so different, because I don't recall my 24" assembly being any problem
Assembly was easy, as I first read and then followed the instructions
However, assembly was fast and easy even with a standard screwdriver.
The perfect height for my bookshelf speakers, easy assembly with just a Phillips head screwdriver, and they look great
Assembly is easy - just turn some screws (Phillips head) and in about 10-20 minutes you will have a pair of speaker stands
That's fine, it makes for a tight structure, but due to the poor quality of material, the right pillar on BOTH speaker stands cracked in the exact same place.

They were the right height for rear surround and I personally did not have any issues with the wood cracking while putting the screws in
I would recommend putting some kind of filler on the threads of the screws as the holes area a little loose, this would probably prevent the screws from backing out over time
The manufactured wood splits very easily when putting in screws
I'm convinced that other reviewers who have experienced splitting issues with the composite wood upright are not properly lining up the fasteners before tightening.
I read the reviews prior to purchasing these stands and was aware of the wood splitting issue.
I experienced the wood-split issue mentioned by others (wood splits in the two vertical pieces near the base and top plate) in the first two pairs, but came up with a solution to avoid it with the 3rd pair.
CONCLUSIONI gave these stands 5 stars despite the wood-split issue because the problem does not affect the stand's performance.

And with it being made of cheap particle board it split as soon as the screws were turned
It's very dense, and quite substantial, much more so than cheap laminate particle board
When you feel or see the first contact of both boards that you are screwing together - STOP - or you will split the boards
These stands live in my dark media room so looks don't bother me as long as it's matte black, and these work perfect for my purpose
I saw all these complaints about splitting the particle board and knew right away people were whipping out the chordless screwdrivers and over-driving the screws
