Selmer 981 Song Flute, Black - 2024 report by Whydis
Selmer 981 Song Flute, Black
Color:Original Version
This song flute is designed to fit smaller hands and is the educator's choice. Full octave scale from C to D. One piece construction, black finish.
The Flutophone has a wider, but more narrow mouthpiece by a millimeter or two, resulting in slightly less airflow, but a more defined tone (like a recorder, bright, clear tone), while the Songflute has a higher airflow, resulting in more wind noises and more body, a bit more sounding like an occarina
And it does have a nice tone, just not what I expected.
Either one are great flutes to learn on, but the cheaper price, and the correct tone (compared to the error on the flutophone's D), make this my favorite
The song flute has raised holes which are much easier to cover, and the tone is more pleasant and requires less breath control, allowing for more contrast in volume while in tune
if i were a musician i might be able to make great music with it, i'm not and this is one piece of cheap
Now that my daughter does not have to focus as much on her tone and slow air flow, but more on the rhythms and pitches, she is learning music much easier and enjoys it more now that the frustration has been minimized
Even though this song flute was made for children first starting out in music, as a rank beginner myself in playing musical instruments this is a handy little music maker

The kids liked the model 401 flutophone better as it stands up
It works on the same basic music theory as the Flutophone and similar
Even though I already had bought a Trophy 11 inch flutophone and was practicing with it, I also purchased this product to determine if I could also play this smaller flute

The Flutophone's holes are more straight (in line), like on a recorder flute
Both have 7 top holes and one bottom hole, although the flutophone has an eight hole right next to the low C, to play the C#.The differences are minute

I'm quite sure without this bell, the songflute would have been the louder flute
A nice quality flute with good sound at a decent price.
