As other reviewers have mentioned, they do not work well with a portable CD player and would need an amp to perform properly

I use a phillips portable CD player connected to a total airhead amp.

This is actually my 3rd pair of these; the first I gave to my son because he used headphones much more than I; the second I got for my brother to help him better appreciate his Pono portable music player; the 3rd I got because I was so impressed with the combo of Pono and these that I wanted the same set-up for myself.

But, if you want to have a taste of what the audiophiles listen to with their $20,000 on up home rigs - this is one of the ways to get close - but you need a reasonable amplifier that is designed for high impedance headphones, and a good music source

Most portable audio players WILL require an amplifier to get the best performance out of these headphones (I recommend the PA2V2 portable amplifier from Electric Avenues).

The biggest problem may be listening to them to loud and hurt your ears.

The only real problem with the HD 600's is that if there are any imperfections in your music, such as problems with sound mastering or just being an MP3 you converted from YouTube, you will hear every imperfection

But the durability is a terrible problem!

If you're going with a stationary home DAC, then make sure that it has balanced outputs, and get a true balanced amplifier (Headamp GS-X is a good model, as is the Heardoom Max Balanced, or perhaps a cheaper but still excellent SFT-build balanced M^3)
