Shure SFG-2 Stylus Tracking Force Gauge - 2024 report by Whydis
Shure SFG-2 Stylus Tracking Force Gauge
The Shure Model SFG-2 Stylus Tracking Force Gauge is a highly accurate beam balance that is designed for measuring stylus tracking forces from 0.5 to 3.0 grams in .05 gram increments. Its rolling bearing pin pivots are engineered for minimal friction...
If your phono cartridge isn't tracking at the suggested force, you are damaging your records; using this device to ensure proper tracking force is a no-brainer.
The mirror provided allows for extremely easy recognition of when your stylus is tracking at the proper force and is a very smart yet simple addition
Have used this several times and it works great for precise tracking force.
I purchased one from Amazon and when it arrived it took me about 10 minutes to read the instructions and find the accurate force for my cartridge and stylus.
With a tracking force gauge and a decent adjustable tonearms along the the recommended tracking force as given by the manufacturer of your stylus, you can get optimal tracking force without degrading your records
Even if you have a tonearm with a tracking force scale on the counterweight, this provides a much more accurate way of knowing exactly how much force is being exerted on your precious records
The mirror is a handy way to tell if your scale is balanced
The SFG-2 is simply the best and most reliable way to set the tracking weight.
Way overdue as a matter of fact
but it seems to be the most accurate way to adjust the tracking force of the stylus that I have found.

If (like me) you were relying on your tone arm's dial-up calibration to get the correct tracking weight, you're probably in for a big surprise
Simple, yet precise, useful, high quality... love everything about it
This tool has been around for a long time and is essential for vinyl fans with a good quality turntable.
The instructions are clear and this item does not appear to be a flimsy, low quality device.
It has some of the features of better quality balances, but as a Metrologist, I would not vouch for any percentage of accuracy without at least a comparative calibration
I was so pleased that I then ordered a Shure cartridge to replace the one in my new turntable so that I knew that my turntable would turn out for me the very best quality I could afford.
Some pricier digital scales are probably a bit more accurate, but when you get down to accuracy of 1/10th gram, that's splitting hairs
what more could I ask?A digital scale would be slightly easier to use, but this scale is worth the price (as long as the measurement is accurate...)
This is as accurate as any balance type scale I've ever used and is built to last
Bottomline is, you have to be very careful with those; having said that, a well calibrated scale will definitely be very accurate and provide a higher resolution to allow for very precise VTF calibration
Forget about cheap digital pressure scales that are probably not so accurate.
Recently purchased a new turntable and was hesitate to use the SFG-2 as it may not accurate after so many years
With my recently acquired upscale turntable, I needed a modern tracking force gauge.
Sure, you can calibrate an SL1200 or similar knockoffs without one, but for all of the weird turntables or people who want to measure tracking force quickly, this thing is great.

Wow, my turntable was way off, this helped to ensure where it is set at
This gauge was easy to use, and helpled me take my vinyl listening to the next level!
The more expensive electronic gauges depend on perfect battery status for correct reading
This Gauge is too good, very easy to use and dirt cheap not to buy it if you are serious about your Music.
The gauge is fairly easy to use and works through the balance beam principle
Presumbly the electronic gauges can give you a more accurate number but if you are setting the force in the mid point of the specified range I do not see that it will be a problem.
