used many microphones before (small/large diaphragm, condenser/dynamic/ribbon, different polar patterns, etc.) and this is easily the best one I've ever used
Listed below will be the pros and cons but overall this is the best microphone I’ve used
This mic has been used on so many stellar albums its incredible that it costs less than $400.
Amazing Microphone used by professionalsThe question is: is it worth the money?
Best vocal mic I have used in a home studio 10/10 would recommend
All I can say is that the Shure SM7B is absolutely amazing
The Shure SM7B is a legendary favorite among professional broadcasters, producers, & engineers
I got this mic as an upgrade from the XLR Blue Yeti and the XLR AT-2020 and what I've noticed in comparing them all is that the Shure SM7B is wildly better, it's so good and sounds super crisp
For those of you reviewing the SHURE SM7B and complaining about it, nine times out of ten it's because you don't understand how it works.
Of the lot the Shure SM7B is my favorite of the ones still available.
and I don’t need a cloudlifter or anything extra to boost the gain
I'm using it with a Focusrite interface and needed to add a Cloudlifter CL-1 to add some clean gain
whatever it is, of CLEAN PURE gain that the cloudlifter gives, REALLY helps
I promise you'll notice a difference, I also used my friends Roland VT-4 with and without the cloudlifter and the cloudlifter just makes it more crisp with no fuzzy gain sounds
You need at least 60 dB of clean gain on the preamp though.
You MUST HAVE a very powerful interface or additional preamp for this mic to sound as good as it can.
Other folks are right: you need an aggressive preamp, but for many of us a decent solid state unit like the DBX286 performs beautifully
the gain requirements mean you bump up the preamp's self noise considerably
It also works well with the Cloud Lifter, although I find that the CL can push a preamp into too much gain even at low settings, thereby loosing the color that a higher gain setting gives a particular preamp.-Second, you do have to play around a bit with the mid and presence boosts that are adjustable on the back of the mic
You will need a good preamp to push this microphone to get the best sound out of it
I have other, less expensive dynamic mics and as you imagine, you get what you pay for
It does shootouts with some of the best mics in the industry for a reason
CL-1" which apparently "Gives passive mics up to +25dB of additional clean active output (volume)
Easily one of the best sounding mics on the market for the money
If you are thinking about getting a microphone it is absolutely worth it to save up and go for this first, I much regret buying the other mics at all because this thing is just tops
With thousands of dollars in my microphone drawer -- dynamics and condensers, classics and new -- I kick myself for not buying this mic sooner because this $350 bargain has now become my first choice for every vocal project.

Picks up my voice and generally leaves out of the background noise

If you're serious about getting your vocals to sound great, and have the money to spend I would highly recommend this over a cheaper mic as it will save money on upgrading in the future.
The sound is unmatched and it cancels out all of the background noise
This mic, paired witha good pre amp sounds amazing for soft melodies as well as for yells and screams
