Play the "Greatest Hits" version of Silent Hill 2 if you're going on play it on the PS2, as it includes the "Born From a Wish" minigame
The best version in my opinion is the PS2 greatest hits version, it has the bonus story Born From a Wish in which you play as Maria before the events of the main game.

The box was for the Greatest Hits, but inside was just Silent Hill 2
The apartment complex especially drags, and the hospital, being only more of the same, just didn't freak me out as it did in SH1.
This was the first survival horror game that I actually really loved and I still feel affection to it
#*! game if you feel like turning off all the lights,turning up the surround sound, and experiencing a great survival horror game that's good from start to finish!
I realize mine is not a popular opinion, but I think the Silent Hill series is the weakest of the more popular survival horror games.

The graphics are good, the music is wonderful, the video is great and the game play is good.
They don't have sudden bursts of musical scores to make you jump, like RE does, instead, they rely on a subtler form of spontaniety - when something is going to surprise you in a cut-scene, they just have it dart out of the corner of the screen at you, without any surges of cheesy music or a direct focus on its entrance, and whatever hellish sounds it makes comes home and scares the living crap out of you (cough cough, Pyramid Head, cough cough).
It's laughable that some people think Silent Hill 2 has better music and creepier sounds than the original.
In some instances, I even hear music that's an obvious cheesy attempt to copy the soundtrack of the original but not NEARLY as memorable or effective the second time around.
The graphics being very good, especially those of the characters themselves, recognition has to be given to Akira Yamaoka for the awesome music in these games

The thing is, the graphics aren't SCARIER to me personally over the original Silent Hill because, you know, what makes a nightmare frightening in the first place (to me at least)
This is one case where improved technology certainly played a part in making the graphics look better without actually *being* better because the improved graphics don't bring the fear and intensity to the table as a means to successfully compliment the amazing looking graphics, and that's a big problem with the actual horror in Silent Hill 2.I like the lead character named James.
It has the right amount of scare in it with great graphics, voicing, and most of all, storyline
As for the story, look, the story's solid, but this game was released back in mid-2001.
The musical scores, coupled with the character animations and voice acting, helps construct an ideal atmosphere for such a dark story to prosper.
All this story would be moot if there wasn't a good presentation, which there definitely is
And when you realize all the symbolism and understand the great story, you'll accept Silent Hill 2 for what it is: one of the best games ever.
Less gory and satanic than the first game, but with a great story- the most coherent and understandable in the series, and with a fantastic twist at the end
What that means is less cheap scares and monsters hiding in plain sight, and a much more interactive experience
The monsters are appropiately creepy, and move strangely enough to make you think that they were once human... or were they
They, as well as the monsters, seem to be a reflection of some part of James' personality
It's been said that the most horrific monster in the world can never be captured on film, because it resides within the collective imaginations of the audience

it bothers me a little bit the masterpiece that is the original Silent Hill is *constantly* being pushed to the back so people can admire the sequel instead.
The length of the game bothered me a bit, as the main game map is quite elaborate and seemed to have a lot of unrealized potential, but that goes back to the weakness of the basic plot and the lack of any major side stories of consequence
I must confess I am of the Atari generation, so it took me a bit to get use to the controls on this game.
Interaction with "friendly" NPCs is more emphasized than the first game, which slows down the pacing a bit but forces you to invest more emotionally in the events

One is remarkably passive/ aggressive, one is suicidal, one is a little girl who seems to know him, and one of them is a woman who looks just like his dead wife, which brings out some conflicting emotions in James
Trouble is, James's wife has been dead for three years.
The game starts with James revealing that he recently recieved a letter from his dead wife asking him to come and visit her in Silent Hill
in that special place"This is the main line of the letter that James recieves from his presumably dead wife.
