Apparently this does not work with iPhones but can if you get an adapter

The mic does not work on my Macbook Pro, but it works on my PC.

However it seems that the mics themselves have a highly omnidirectional pickup pattern so it does not produce a strong stereo image and does pick up quite a bit of background/ambient sound.
