Reviews around render (5.00 of 5)

  • This lens has a lovely rendering of colors and 'bokeh' but has quality issues that are unacceptable, especially when you're paying $1,600 for it
  • Beautiful rendering of images, very sharp, and out-of-focus bits are very smooth

Reviews around mm (5.00 of 5)

  • smallZeiss Loxia 35mm f/2.0:Pros: Fully metal construction, goes down to f/22, direct manual focus, fairly small, declickable apertureCons
  • I've tried about 10-11 Zeiss and Sony lenses in my career, and this 35mm is by far the best of its class
  • qualitySony/Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 (SEL35F28Z):Pros: very compact, lowest priceCons: not as bright as others, no aperture ringBest if you need
  • The Sigma 30mm with the MC11 might work - I haven't test it myself though

Reviews around length (5.00 of 5)

  • Taking that into consideration, while the 35mm focal length is convenient for framing landscapes, it is not as ideal as slower wide angle lenses that tend to have flatter fields of focus, and are more consistently sharp across the frame.
  • Love the focal length
  • Not that bad imo feels great and better build quality than any of my Canon l lenses

Reviews around walk (5.00 of 5)

  • Not that bad imo feels great and better build quality than any of my Canon l lenses
  • Autofocus speeds are not fast enough for fast walking or running subjects
  • With the 35mm, I have a more useful walk around camera that can perform much better in low light conditions but also creates better background blur (smoother "bokeh") as the 35mm allows you to get closer to your subject which improves background blurring (as does shooting with a wider aperture of 1.4 versus 1.8).
  • I enjoy using it as a versatile walk-around portrait prime, both in daylight and in low-light

Reviews around autofocus (5.00 of 5)

  • Only the f-stops 2.0 and 2.5 work somewhat, all others from f1.4 to f4.0 are literally unusable, and this is a real pain, because this is why people buy lenses with low f-stops
  • love this lens, love the f stop ring on the outside of the lens, love shooting medium portraits at 1.4 and love how you can separate subjects from the background
  • If you’re willing to forgo useable autofocus and can deal with the minor, but existing, quirks of adapting lenses, then you have a vast array of other cheaper and smaller alternatives such as the Sigma 35 1.4 ART, Canon 35F2IS etc etc
  • The autofocus is fast and the images are sharp edge to edge

Reviews around quality (4.59 of 5)

  • It a pure bred, pure blood E mount lens, with unmatched Quality of design and manufacture, not some compromise where you have to mount an adapter
  • I thought the size would deter me from using it as much as I
  • The caveat to my 5 start rating is that those who cannot specifically identify a need for a high quality fast aperture 35mm lens and/or are willing to live with some compromises, might be better suited by the multitude of smaller and more affordable alternatives out there
  • No autofocus, no auto aperture settingBest compromise on size/brightness if you don't need autofocusFor pure image quality, brightness, and background blur, this Sony/Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 (SEL3514Z) is the best
  • The lens is a full metal construction, which has a more premium feel, however, I’ve learned to appreciate that lenses with a high quality plastic construction (like the Canon 24-70 2.8 MKII) are less prone to knicks and scratches.

Reviews around image (4.26 of 5)

  • Using it with my Sony A6500 and the image is REALLY clean
  • Yes, this lens is expense but it compensates well with the design and the beautiful images produced by this lens
  • No autofocus, no auto aperture settingBest compromise on size/brightness if you don't need autofocusFor pure image quality, brightness, and background blur, this Sony/Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 (SEL3514Z) is the best
  • Here's a comparison of the other 35mm options for full frame Sony E mount:Sony/Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 (SEL3514Z):Pros: brightest, best image quality (this is subjective), declickable apertureCons: size, focus by wire, most expensiveBest for low light, background blur, overall

Reviews around aperture (4.26 of 5)

  • All things considered, as good as this lens is, it appeals to a very specifically to those who prioritize uncompromisingly good optical quality in a fast aperture 35mm lens, and are willing to pay for it.
  • This is typical for large aperture lenses as fast aperture optical designs often yield lenses with curved fields of focus that affect resolution in the corners.
  • When I first bought the lens, the aperture also suffered from a sort of glitch: occasionally, when the aperture control ring was turned, the aperture would stop itself down to an f/4-ish diameter and refuse to budge
  • This is the sharpest DOF values i've seen while using the fastest aperture value capable.
  • Remember this was just a fast Aperture Priority set at Iso 80 with a shutter speed set by the camera at 1/80 on a very bright sunny mid-day in NYCI really need to shoot more and with difference settings and focus points

Reviews around bokeh (4.10 of 5)

  • An amazing lens with tack sharp photos and incredible creamy bokeh
  • Quick and DirtyPros:-Resolution wide open-Smooth bokeh-Minimal CA and Distortion-Very good build quality-Aperture ring is a nice bonusCons:-Expensive-Very large and heavy for a mirrorless lensI have an affinity for the 35mm focal length, as the FOV a 35mm lens provides is ideal for the type of shooting I do: environmental/journalistic style portraits (I shot weddings for four years, but have since gotten out of it), and casual landscape shooting when travelling.
  • Has a cinema like quality and the good bokeh surprises.
  • A very special lens and great bokeh for portrait work !
  • I used the lens on the A7S II to shoot some 4K video and the bokeh is just amazing

From the Manufacturer Distagon T* FE 35mm F1.4 ZA Full-frame E-mount Prime LensThe 35mm focal length makes the Distagon T* FE 35mm F1.4 ZA an excellent choice for a wide range of photography, from snapshots and landscapes to indoor portraits and night scenes – producing beautiful bokeh through its bright 9- blade F1.4 aperture
  • The advanced optical design - including aspherical and “AA” (advanced spherical) lens elements combined with renowned ZEISS T* coating - deliver outstanding image resolution and suppresses reflections for superior contrast clarity.Additional FeaturesUnmatched ZEISS T* (T-star) coatingCoated optics were pioneered by Carl Zeiss - and this superb lens features the ZEISS T* (T-Star) coating that virtually eliminates lens flare, internal reflection and light scattering that can otherwise occur at glass-to-air surfaces
  • The T* coating contributes to outstanding image quality, with high contrast and uniformly excellent resolution right out to the image edges
  • Not simply applied to any lens - the T* symbol only appears on multi-element lenses in which the required performance has been achieved throughout the entire optical path, therefore guaranteeing the highest quality.Circular ApertureWhen changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred
  • This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens
  • Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light
  • α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops
  • Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.Aspherical lens elementsAspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight
  • Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane
  • This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses
  • Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion
  • Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight.Responsive aperture ringA responsive aperture ring offers positive action that will satisfy professional photographers and moviemakers alike
  • The aperture ring click stops can be switched on or off as required
  • “Off” is the preferred setting for moviemaking since it results in the least aperture operation noise
  • When “On” the ring provides tactile feedback that is useful when shooting stills
