I put the metal plate inside my Spigen Tough Armor case (between the hard plastic and soft rubbery material so it is not directly against my phone - didn't want that to damage phone as my LG G6 has beautiful rear glass)

I’ve had a standard holder in my car, but it never quite worked for me because my car has the rare vertical vents... which makes it super hard to find a standard holder that works for me

Recommend to use the spigen plates though, others may not work as well
The magnet is strong, but if you have a really thick phone case it doesn't work nearly as well.
Works well with my spigen case, doesn't work as well with other cases.
Instead we just have the magnet sit in the middle sandwiched between the case and the phone, which works just as well without having to commit to sticking it straight onto the phone
