The only thing I've adjusted is LED brightness since I keep this thing in my living room
The thing that really caught my eye was the copy button, but after researching some more, I really liked the Synology DSM or Disk Station Manager, which for those that don’t know is the name of the operating system.
It loses a star because the main reason I bought this was to administer backups, and that's the hardest thing to do on this sucker.
Can't say enough good things about Synology NAS products, they are rock solid
This is fast, secure, and totally expandable -- three things I was looking for in a solution, and most importantly of all, accessible remotely.
Easy installation and great replacement for my old NAS.
Confusing as it could possibly be
The installation of drives was easy, and changing the configuration to Raid 1 (classic mirroring) was simple and quick
Installation - which required that I install two HDDs - was very easy and literally took me 10 minutes and that is because I don't like to read the manual.
I could put the stuff in containers and get better performance but so far it hasn't chugged
Now I have hot swap, more space, more features, and better performance.
/s High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Retail Packaging 0S04005 drives and had it up on the network in less than an hour
Sure you can tweak FreeNAS enough to yield better performance dollar for dollar, but the convenience of the Synology makes it more worth the investment
Here are some of my thoughts about the DS918+:PROS- Excellent performance for the
This unit was easy to setup and I was able to configure on my own.
I'm not sure if I'm criticizing the unit or Synology's customer support.
All in all, if you like synology nas products - you’ll probably like this unit for its flexible upgrade options, and good performance compared to older units.
They both setup with the same amount of ease, but the DS916+ is a faster unit.
I received a bad DS218+ unit, but understand those things happen.
My second synology been very happy with this company overall
Synology offers a proxy for remote connections and it works well
So, I took one (1) star off because it is my opinion that Synology should have provided better support, in some way, for their obviously flawed, and expensive, DS415+ NAS; Synology failed in that regard
, ie support, guides, community+Expandable Unit and RAM+A lot of Apps+Many Cloud options+Free Custom Domain (Ends in synology.me)+Solid construction+2 Step Verification-Expensive-Lock and Key feel cheap-Synology RAM is expensive compared to other RAM brands-No Drive app for Apple TV, this won’t bother most, but I prefer to navigate using the folders over a Media app solution.
Shame on you Synology, SHAME!Just to be clear, for those considering a synology NAS, my issue is not with the functionality of the NAS, it is with the lack of transparency in their product description and advertising
I was horrified when I opened the Amazon box to find my new NAS and accompanying hard drives unsecured like this
Synology has a list on their website with compatible drives
and it was literally as easy as taking the drives out of my old one, putting them in my new one, and after a few mouse clicks, it adapted to the new model like nothing ever happened
Easy drive installation, easy setup via the Synology website
I have to install 5 new enterprise hard drives and build a new raid volume.
