It is a bit underpowered in ram and processor speed, though supports great features in Synologies latest OS

I like the Synology app store and all the great features you can add to the device

A great feature is that it allows me to set multiple "accounts" via the dashboard

If I can get one on great sale, may buy again and decorate it, enhancing its best feature :P

You May Want a Real Media Server with Real Support and Honest Customer Support

$5 each, which seems like a reasonable price however some of the shipping options cost more than the part so pick carefully.

I'm really glad I found this unit at such a great price point.

Synology has full support for all their products, and their apps along with their hardware gets a full 5 stars from me

I will update this rating if/when Synology resolves this issue.

Synology is far, far more capable than WD's NAS storage.

I also have the option, also with a free Synology app, to mirror this NAS to another remote one, for added redundancy of backups.

I was considering a WD My Cloud dual drive NAS, but a friend strongly recommended Synology as an alternative.

This is a versatile, full function server that's easy to set up and includes a very robust suite of utilities and applications available as a no cost add-on

This server is quick & efficient, has two ethernet ports absolutely the smallest professional server I've ever seen!

The server is a little bit slow, but fairly easy to setup and use for someone with little computer/network knowledge

Great server, but I found the software to be a bit slow.

We also use it as a Plex media server and it works great.

That's nice to know, but a NAS is kind of designed to work with the ethernet cable in place, so that's not really a viable solution.

Now after having this system I can't imagine ever not having redundant backup solutions to your pictures and videos

This is a very good solution for multimedia sharing at home

Also allows easy install and setup of 3rd party apps (MariaDB in my case) and is really slick.

Setup is clunky and non-intuitive

I stuffed 4 SSD drives in it and setup it up, super easy to setup, use and maintain.

Setup is annoying and there so many options/settings that are very confusing, that I could not figure out how to get it work as it should have.-transfer speeds are dismally slow.

I have been using this frequently, and this device is incredible, it has 0 issues and continues to provide a compelling external storage experience

CPU sitting at 99% most of the time is likely an indication that it is an underpowered device for the software supplied.

This little device is pretty capable for its meager specs.

If all you need is file share for your network for media and backups, manage a few cameras and a way to have your own cloud storage for portable devices this is perfect.

This NAS continues to prove to be a very powerful and stable device.

I'd throw this thing in the trash, except I destroyed my existing HDD enclosures in an attempt to get this to work.

I couldn't figure out how to make this stupid thing work without formatting the drive.

But as far as being a reliable backup drive, things are pretty good

While I was experimenting with the ethernet link as a source of noise, I picked up and set down the unit a number of times.

I like that it’s a 4 bay device but dislike the fact that the unit is slow

Unit has now calmed down and is working well for music server and photo backup

It's a well designed, compact box (I'm tempted to say "cute", but this is a NAS and not a teddy bear).

My other boxes from WD and Lenovo may be slow, but when I run into minor installation issues/questions, both companies were very helpful

Just a word of warning, this box only supports a 32-bit OS

Instructions for installing the hard drives was incorrect.

There are higher capacity hard drives that are too thick for the size

The DS416s takes the 2.5" drives, very portable device if needed, holds up to 8TB of storage

Now that it was mapped this is where I could see the drive in Lightroom to clear some of my older photos off my laptops' hard drive

so I have some confidence that I will get plenty of notice if one of my hard drives fails.
