the transcode feature is a joke, lots of format video/audio cannot be supported
Besides that (which was one of the main reason why i bought it), works very smooth, lot of features and apps, and incredibly easy install phase
A lot of people would highly recommend teaming it with a cloud option, but with 3TB of data, I hate waiting 6 months for my data to be finished uploading to the cloud
This thing is very fast and has more features than I could ever use.
Tons of room for storage, robust, configurable- just a lovely thing I'm happy to have finally sprung for.
I eagerly unpacked it and it looked straightforward enough, which is a good thing since the only instructions was a single sheet folded up which looked like it was written for an ikea product.
After an easy setup and install I found the device lost 50% of it's transfer speed going from 72MB/s to 32-35 MB/s (SMB2) after a wek of use.
Setup is very straightforward, and just involves plug & play--what could be easier?
This was a good lesson as to why to have offsite backup, but also made me realise I needed a more robust RAID setup at home
The quality of the hardware is great, installing DSM 6.2 beta meant I got BTRFS support, and the setup was relatively painless (although the wizard makes it hard to do custom installations from the start)

I bought the best 1-bay Synology in a pinch to get backups back online, only to find Synology does not support full-disk encryption
It is tempting to go with the more affordable 2-bay option but you need to upgrade your hard drives in the future to add storage and larger drives are more expensive than lower capacity drives.
Plus, I still have another free bay in case I need to add more storage cheaply
I owned synology for a long while now and this is the best and fastest 2 bay one ever

But this is a really impressive device that syncs to the cloud services I have to give me an off-site backup, I can back my PC up to the NAS which backs it up to the cloud, and now I have a home media server.
Synology has a really solid device here
My only complaint, which is my fault, is that the device is not strong enough to support Plex Media Server on its own.

Nice to see a manufacturer actively improving their products months after purchase.
- The WD products were never particularly stable as a network backup target
Those negatives aside, it's a pretty good product.
I know this is a bit long for a review, but I just want to share my findings with everyone and hopefully be helpful to the Synology regarding their future product
This is a great NAS that does alot more than just host files.
Regardless, the ease of use is a huge bonus, the fact that I could plug this in and do some minor setup to have myself a great NAS is great
At this point, I'm stuck between standing up another server for these two applications (using the NAS as data storage only and hoping that transfer speeds from this app server and the NAS aren't too slow to devices), or trying to sell this product and purchase the DS218+ model
This NAS is NOT supported by PLEX which is the primary reason to get a NAS for me
One thing that is tough to beat, and a real treat, if you need to chat with a NAS expert, no problem, they are there
The other good news is, for those of you who don't have your heart set on Plex, there is an application for the Amazon FireStick called Archos that seems to work very well in my opinion
The good news I found is, though there is some stuttering it is pretty easy to work around it by pausing some of the back up services you may have running while tyring to streaming video, which, while its not ideal, I don't find to be that big of a deal given the price point compared to other solutions
My conclusion is I have some good news and some bad news
Fear not though, I did find an alternate solution I will share in the good news
My conclusion is I have some good news and some bad news
Running as an internal movie server transfer all my movies via usb 3.0 Using a patriot fast drive , bought a 6 inch usb 3 cable to hang off the NAS port USB to
You're better off with a regular external hard drive for $80.
It would cost over $500 to upgrade to a pair of 8 TB hard drives.
Dropbox free, and Amazon Drive (1TB option for now).
The upgrade procedure I followed was backing up my unit to an external hard drive, made sure my DS115 was upgraded to the latest DSM versions
