This is a fantastic NAS device with great performance...as long as you stay within it's abilities.
I have since moved my Plex server to an ESXi-based system with the Synology acting as the VM datastore and the performance is excellent.
I was worried I wouldn't notice enough improvement for the cost---esp. since I didn't have any real issues with the 1512 (other than hoping for better performance)
I just loved the quality and performance, the interface.
Synology technical support leaves a LOT to be desired and must improve as they are shipping and designing larger and larger NAS units

That being said, this unit makes a great backup unit, or is just fine if all you care about is 12 bays for really big storage, at the cost of much lower performance.
When that happens (typically any time after the first year of use), the motherboard is bricked, which means the entire unit is dead
I would definitely buy this unit again and I highly recommend it.
The unit itself is so much easier to use than my QNAP, you don't need screws or anything to hold the drives in the bays, the speed and responsiveness is very fast!!I'm very happy with my purchase!
Excellent unit, with the large NAS Enterprise drives, it really smokes!
Before you buy this unit, you may not know about its super-quick cousin the DS3617xs (looks exactly the same); which has low-end but still Xeon processor, 16GB ECC (correcting) RAM expandable to 48GB!, and so fast it can utilize two (2) of the 10Gig Ethernet ports if you addon a compatible 10G NIC at blazing speeds
, I AM happy 😃 so far with this product (about 80%)It is WAY better than the Drobo EVER was, and the data transfer (so far, about 70% complete) is going very smoothly (THANK GOD!!!😜🎉👍🏼)I thought that USB3 to/through Ethernet (1G) would be slow?!
I've only had this thing for a month, so I've barely scratched the surface of its capabilities.
But this thing is rock solid, and has a ton of additional features.
I'm finding this thing to be so much easier with AudioStation to get songs in to my iPhone rather than iTunes which tends to slow down over time when it gets loaded down with lots of content.
Seems like I was always having issues with the drobo.
I have a real and serious issue, I have data at risk, and Synology answers are evading their real issues and trying to put more weight on my end as a customer
