Reviews around fit (5.00 of 5)

  • I then soldered only 1 or 2 tabs and rechecked for proper fit and knob rotation once again
  • Other reviewer stated that he had to cut holes in the plastic case in order to get a good fit, that is just plain false
  • I used a piece of tape to hold it still while putting the circuit board into the cabinet in order to check for proper fit
  • As the instructions state, the small board containing the volume pot must be at right angles to the main board for a proper fit
  • I found that if you position the volume control and headphone jack on the PCB and hold it there with a little piece of blue painter's masking tape (do one of them first, then the other) in their positions and DON'T solder yet, then place the PCB in the case and test for fit with the holes in the case . . . if the fit is not good, reposition the part and secure again with the tape

Reviews around use (5.00 of 5)

  • the use of a DVM/Ohm meter will be helpful to confirm the resistance values if there is any doubt.
  • I've been using lead free solder with the kids, and so far so good.
  • Some reviews talk about missing components, mostly a couple 10kohm resistors and the shield can for the detector stage, but my kit had all components present, as well as some extras that could be used in case certain measurements were out of range

Reviews around spend (5.00 of 5)

  • Again, time well spent
  • Your reward for this time well spent is being able to listen to this great little portable radio that just may very well be one of the best AM only radios you can build or buy new anywhere anymore for that matter
  • Time well spent

  • Probably the best thing about this kit is the history of the 2P3 radio that's printed both on the box this comes in, as well as on one "page" of the large instruction manual/poster.

  • Out of all the DIY electronic project kits I've seen & bought on Amazon, this one by FAR has to be the most well packaged and engineered.
  • I didn't have a clue what to do about the current-testing breaks (A, B, & C) that need to be jumped until I saw a comment here mentioning it
  • Impressed by the good quality, excellent documentation and packaging

  • It has a really nice case that reminds me of the old "Boy's" radios of the 60's.
  • When built carefully, the 2P3 radio is sensitive and selective, with nice audio -- and it looks great in its stylish case

Reviews around solder (3.86 of 5)

  • This by far is a great little radio, I spent about 6 hours building it, I don't like to rush my work, makes for a nice job, you will need some experience in soldering, basic knowledge of electronics, if not, it may be a little rough, I suggest for those with lil experience to read the great paper work they include, you can find a lot of information on YouTube , there's apps you can get for your phone to tell you values of transistors, capacitors, ceramic and electrolitic, mostly all electronic parts, there's lots of information right here in other reviews, make sure you have a good magnifying glass,a good soldering station because a cheap 10 dollar iron from Walmart won't cut it, , best to learn as much as you can about electronics, books videos ect
  • I've been using lead free solder with the kids, and so far so good.
  • If you use lead-free solder (which I recommend, even though it is a touch trickier to handle) make sure you are using a hot enough iron, around 800F. Invest in a decent imported adjustable pencil iron for this kit.
  • The soldering is quite difficult since the board is densely arranged - it is too easy to link neighboring spots by accident
  • The radio is of moderate to moderate-high difficulty and is best performed by a builder with good soldering skills.

Reviews around instruction (3.09 of 5)

  • Nice little kit with good instructions to learn about radio receivers.
  • Mostly agree with other comments regarding the instructions: They are well-illustrated and the information is good, but not always well organized
  • I didn't have a clue what to do about the current-testing breaks (A, B, & C) that need to be jumped until I saw a comment here mentioning it
  • The instructions are excellent in comparison to other kits available but room for improvement exists.
  • Tecsun has created a top-notch kit, but rather poor assembly instructions.

Reviews around resistor (1.00 of 5)

  • I technically should knock of one star because, as other reviewers have mentioned, the kit IS missing two 10K-ohm resistors; and also because the documentation shows an empty IF transformer shield can soldered to the circuit board (covering the detector diode and a couple of other small parts) and that shield can is missing
  • As others have found, two 10 K resistors were missing, which I replaced with my own stock.
  • I'm sure the radio will work fine without the shield can, but you MUST replace the two missing resistors or it won't work
