Although some of the characters you create face adversity along the way and some may perish the game shows kids and adults what it was like to travel west in the early days.

I got this game because I loved it as a kid and I figured, since it's the 5th edition, it would be even better.

There is less of a show, also, when you reach oregon city (it actually seems like this version is a bit dumbed down, or something).However, it probably would entertain younger kids because this version is a little simpler, and offers more personalization for the intensity of game you are looking for

You can play Oregon Trail without the CD which seems to correct a lot of the problems with install and running properly

If the game was stable and fishing was more straight-forward (and worked) the game would actually be enjoyable to play.

It is almost exactly the same, with a few great updates (the fishing and gathering options, as well as the story of the Montgomery family).

In this Oregon Trail you can once again chose how many you will travel with and name them (for some crazy reason this feature was eliminated in the 4th Oregon Trail edition), but you can also CHOOSE the times you stop to collect wild fruit or fish, instead of these circumstances just happening randomly (which does not make as much sense).

We love this game so much that we play it as a family...the little one hunts and fishes, the older one buys supplies and treats diseases.

Other things, like a piano, are wasted if you buy them bc they are virtually worthless on the trail and add a lot of useless weight

It explains things like oxen are better for pulling than horses and you should buy vinegar bc it prevents scurvy

There were a few nice things in this version, you can fish and gather certain types of berries and herbs

and I learned a few things also, such as the advantages and disadvantages of various draught animals, the pace of travel so as not to overwork the animals, the type of wagon most suitable for the trail, etc.
