It gets a very full sound toward the front above the opening, and the mallet it comes with is nice as well

The mallet is fairly hard plastic, it may sound better with a softer rubber mallet.

If you use different (softer or yarn) mallets, you can achieve warmer sound but the pitch does not change

A hard mallet (the one provided) or your own, easily fills a gym and will be heard through the band playing.
