Reviews around transceiver (5.00 of 5)

  • They are pretty decent dual band transceivers (2M & 70CM)
  • The basic functions work, but ti's more of an expensive scanner that it is a reliable transceiver
  • Get your entry level amateur radio license and enjoy your transceiver legally!Enjoy your
  • The TYT 9800 is a well built, rock solid transceiver for DUAL BAND: 2m & 70cm

Reviews around quad (5.00 of 5)

  • I went looking for an inexpensive quad band for my daily driver and the TYT TH-9800 fits the bill nicely
  • Easy return (pending) & I immediately ordered the correct "quad band model".It arrived Sunday morning
  • Any how tyt seems to be ok lil getting used to the program software sucks, buttons on unit are not for North American hands, kinda functions like the yaseu predisessor, internel speaker pops when on rx buy a good ext one seems to hold freq drift again just all my opinion but so far covers what it says on box again need to find a good nmo quad if you want to use all bands also
  • Otherwise I think it will be a good first quad band for some folks.

Reviews around chirp (5.00 of 5)

  • SOOOOO happy CHIRP works with this radio much easier than the MFG software.
  • It programmed with the cable and software I purchased and with the readily available free software CHIRP
  • SOOOOO happy CHIRP works with this radio much easier than the MFG software.
  • CHIRP is easier to work with and is more logically laid out
  • The software is the easiest and quickest way to program it, but I don't think it works as well as CHIRP

Reviews around band (4.64 of 5)

  • Otherwise I think it will be a good first quad band for some folks.
  • They do handle the GMRS, FRS, PMR, & HAM frequencies, with a good dual band antenna
  • They are pretty decent dual band transceivers (2M & 70CM)
  • Love the radio but wasted two bands
  • For a while it was delightful to use and I felt smug in the fact that I had a good high powered quad band radio for roughly half the price of a "big name" radio.

Reviews around rig (4.47 of 5)

  • This has been a reliable rig sounding great on both VHF and UHF.
  • I find the rig a little quirky to use but not too bad to program
  • I did spend some good money on my antenna but with this cheaper rig I was able to do so
  • It is a China knock off of the Yaesu radio, and maybe if they get the bugs ALL worked out, it would make a nice rig for the money
  • Great little rig,,, Software for programing leaves a bit to be desired but the Rig itself is great for the price

Reviews around antenna (4.47 of 5)

  • The only problem is having enough antennas to handle the frequency coverage.
  • But it has worked really well especially with the Diamond CR-8900 antenna on my pickup truck
  • (So I use a handheld Wouxun connected to a portable antenna)
  • I’m using a DBJ-1 antenna for UHF/VHF testing, however will run it through a duplexer and try out a suitable antenna for the lower bands as well
  • Good coax and a good antenna can make a mediocre radio sound fantastic and poor coax and antenna can make the best radio sound terrible

Reviews around report (4.42 of 5)

  • Problem, all audio reports from other listeners were very quiet and then all of a sudden no one could hear me during nets
  • I have been getting excellent audio feedback reports on the lowest power setting at just 5 watts
  • I get great signal reports with a simple magnetic mount antenna.
  • 2m and 70cm audio reports very good and hitting all the local repeaters on low power.
  • I have a mobile antenna in my attic and I constantly get good signal reports

Reviews around price (4.40 of 5)

  • Ok, so some of the buyers of this radio let the price dictate how many flaws the ycan overlook
  • Great price for an almost duplicate radio of the Yaesu FT.8900 that will save you money3
  • Love the radio great first mobile radio you can do a lot with this for half the price of a yaesu programming is a little tricky with the genric cables.
  • It was the right price for a secondary radio (primary is an all mode)
  • Better than the Yaesu FT-8900, and almost half the price and more features too....

Reviews around audio (4.03 of 5)

  • If you are listening to a signal on one side of the radio and you tune the other side, the audio breaks up with each tuning step.3
  • The signal output is good, the audio is good both sending and receiving
  • I have only used it on 2 meters so far, but have gotten reports that it has exceptionally good audio
  • I connected an external speaker and the audio was fine.
  • When scanning for activity the audio out of the body was crisp, clear and loud even from under the seat.-

Reviews around work (3.92 of 5)

  • I thought being this was the plus model all the bugs had been worked out
  • But it has worked really well especially with the Diamond CR-8900 antenna on my pickup truck
  • I am able to monitor air band, CB, 800 mhz, public safety & commercial uhf/vhf, as well as work the ham bands.
  • This radio is very intuitive and is really fun to operate and have access to four great ham bands, aircraft and 800Mhz scanning functions!Too bad there is no AM transmit on the 29Mhz band! The Quad band antenna that came with the radio works like a dream! It is so nice to be able to go to any of the four bands with no hassles!I programmed FRS, MURS and many of the FM ham bands I love working on the way to work
  • Out of 3 of these radios I have, 2 worked perfectly out of the box, the 3rd was problematic

Reviews around unit (3.75 of 5)

  • I do not know how well these units will perform or continue to perform, over extended periods of time
  • not perfect; other units are more sensitive but they're also a lot more expensive
  • The unit is compact and I like the dual channel left/right.
  • The reason for the three stars is that the unit is a little hard to program
  • Apparently the radio was switched and the defective unit put in

Reviews around feature (3.66 of 5)

  • The ability to separate the face of the radio from the body is a nice feature where you don't have more of the radio to install under or in dash then necessary.
  • Could not disable this "undocumented feature" and returned
  • With the cable, it is possible to re-flash the radio with a firmware version that disables this "feature".3
  • Took me a while to figure out how to program the transceiver to steps of 5 MHz, as it is full of great options and features
  • The Yaesu FT-8900 likely has a more solid keypad mic, but you’ll pay nearly twice the cost and (ironically) lose some features

Reviews around chip (1.69 of 5)

  • The first was that the USB cable is fabricated with a fake USB chip, and that presents a problem for lots of users
  • I would have given it 5 stars, but TTY chose to supply a USB cable with a fake prolific chip in it
  • I've recently Upgraded my license so as soon as I
  • Programming nightmare, the "factory" programming cables have fake chips and do not work

Reviews around beep (1.00 of 5)

  • then I would have to turn it back down to acceptable level .now for the biggest part the most annoying loud beep no matter where your volume is set, every time you push a button to program it or change bands even though I went into the menu settings and turned it off several times it would automatically come back on
  • The beep when you changes channels is loud, but not a deal breaker.
  • The 4th and one thing that really forced me to take the Amazon escape capsule was that the radio has a loud beep when you push buttons
  • The beep that you can't turn off with out changing out components in the radio, and now the the second VFO has lost the squelch capability.
