OK, I must have made the sponge too wet, so I cleaned the entire system with soap, water and Clorox, and learned that the material in the sponge doesn't like Clorox (turned an ugly brownish color).
Really, there must be a better system out there (and it's not the pretty Selmer either, reeds warp in that too!).

I emailed Vandoren shortly after this happened and spoke to a great, very helpful agent who told me that the sponge must be wringed out very well before placing it back in the case

I live in the northeastern US where the winters can become fairly dry (say 35% indoor humidity) and without a good reed holder, reed warpage is a definite problem.

I bought two of a similar model (HRC10 for Bb or Eb clarinet) (at the time of this review, this model appears to be unavailable Amazon).The unit uses a plastic insert (convenient) with 6 little tongues that press down on the 6 reeds.

I have trouble removing the reeds, and I don't think that the device keeps the reeds all that flat - not enough pressure
I felt like my reeds were better and lasted much longer than when in the protectors provided with reeds

OK, so I ordered this little kit, after all I've just ruined 6 reeds and I didn't want to risk things using non-Vandoren parts - after all they (the folks at Vandoren) designed this system, so they MUST know what they're doing
