Storage is great, I love the fact that it is battery powered
This is an outstanding wireless storage device, an Access Point, a DLNA media server, and a potent power bank among other things
Regardless, this is a nice storage solution that has proven useful for me.
This s is a pain as this device is meant for my RV.
This is the first time, however, that I have tried a Wi-Fi portable storage unit, so I was coming in blind in terms of what level of performance to expect.
I have no idea if this is expected behavior with this, but about every 10-15 minutes of use the system will crash and all lights on the device will blink repeatedly
In fact I disabled 2.4ghz to eliminate the slower band all together
I bought this mainly for me use on deployment because I like the idea of it being Wireless
My Passport Wireless Pro Portable external Hard Drive - WiFi USB 3.0 - WDBSMT0040BBK-NESNI really loved the idea and all the features of this product
Overall this is an amazing idea for a solution for traveling photographers, I just hope WD corrects all the issues and develops this further.
I have multiple file formats on my Plex server like everyone else on the planet
It was easy to set up.-I installed Plex without incident and it worked really well as a Plex Media Server
At the time I thought Plex might be the issue, but I found others with the same problem and more technical expertise suggesting that the WD WiFi networking was causing the issue
a great, portable Plex server and backup drive has become a very frustrating experience and product.
Consider this the version 0.5 attempt at a portable plex.
So many features and potential to be amazing but the app just isn't easy to use
This is a rather frustrating "feature"
Another difficult feature of the unit is that if the unit is attached by usb to the computer, it no longer has an interface, it becomes a plain old ordinary hard drive.20180115: further update
However, her favorite feature was the USB slot allowing for portable charging of electronic devices
This feature comes disable and it must be set in the drive’s dashboard
You might as well use one of the many online photo storage options available from other companies.)
It is a great option when you need to go with a minimal setup.
I read/watched numerous reviews that extolled it’s virtues as the absolute best option for external storage for iOS devices and how well it would interface with iOS apps
And looking at the options if I purchase one (and I very well may) will go for the 4T version as the price differential for another 3T is not that much.
In fact I disabled 2.4ghz to eliminate the slower band all together
Worked for about 6 months, then got the dreaded fast blinking lights.
In wifi mode I get the fast blinking LED lights all of them at the same time
: Turn them on, WiFi network never appears and after about 30 seconds all lights start fast blinking, which the manual says is a problem for WD support
When you try to turn on without USB, all leds fast blinking blue
In fact I disabled 2.4ghz to eliminate the slower band all together
"My Passport Wireless" was one of least expensive way to get backup capability for my trips
I managed to work my way through the instructions, and figure out how to set the unit to copy SD cards automagically
If you do not wish to purchase a My Cloud device (NAS) instead, then the only way to reduce memory consumption on a My Passport Wireless Pro would be to limit the amount of content processed by the crawler
well it seems the only way to do that is through computer and browser and it worked fine for me but not fine using the mobile app to begin with.i'm using this mainly for storage of sd cards in the field
This drive comes ExFAT formatted and the faster way to copy files into this hard drive is to connect it directly to a computer using the USB 3.0 port
So in this case, I can shoot video, or take pictures, I can easily offload, that's not a problem, that's why I gave it two stars, that works as advertised
I have been unable to find a solid solution or FAQ on how to get this product to work as advertised
As long as I avoid connecting the drive to that computer with a USB cable, everything works as advertised
I am the persistent type, and after going through the routine a few more times, I'm finding the app/device works as advertised, but they seem to be a bit
It worked exactly as advertised, but the app still needs some working on, it is a bit confusing at the moment navigating the menu and switching the viewable drive (from USB to SD to Phone to Drive.
It can be configured with a cell phone app as well as with a computer
,.. it was a cold windy day at sea and the cabin was the best place to hang for a couple hours
Then when I tried using it again a few days later the same problem happened again
I see cellphones one day making external hard drives obsolete but with cell manufacturers designing products that have limited life to them and forcing data on the cloud - WD will always come out with excellent products like this.
I purchased it so that I could use it a media server in the house as well as on the road in the car/hotel
The biggest issue is the lack of a patch for the KRACK vulnerability as of December 2017
It can be configured with a cell phone app as well as with a computer
The complete lack of support on WD's behalf is really bizarre.
Because other people will still have to deal with the same awful lack of decent documentation, and will very likely run into many of the same problems I and others experienced with the product.
WD 1TB Passport Wireless Pro Portable External Hard Drive died
When not using on trips can use as portable hard drive.
Great portable wireless hard drive and as usual wonderful customer service
The WD 2TB My Passport Wireless Pro Portable External Hard Drive is your typical hard drive from My Passport - but has the added function of wireless set-up
When not using on trips can use as portable hard drive.
My experience is the My Passport doesn't work that way.
And looking at the options if I purchase one (and I very well may) will go for the 4T version as the price differential for another 3T is not that much.
when it worksI also have had bad experiences with the reliability of this product
a great, portable Plex server and backup drive has become a very frustrating experience and product.
After some use I found it far, far better to use with Kodi (subtitles can be handled locally, direct play, etc) and the Plex Connect addon for far less hiccups and a better overall experience
It loses wireless connection after 20 minutes of playing video.
If it's a short video, then it loses connection right after you finish playing the video
If you copy a large file to it - guess what - it loses network connection
You need to connect the the first time with an internet connection available.
Set up of the wireless connectivity was fairly straight-forward, but even with the unit sitting inches away from my computer it didn’t maintain the connection well
And looking at the options if I purchase one (and I very well may) will go for the 4T version as the price differential for another 3T is not that much.
Alas, no matter how many times I tried I simply could not get my Compact disks to fully load on My Passport.
I place my hand on the device to feel the hard disk activity
well i opened it up anyway and to my disappointment the product was scratched like deep gouges down the side of the product and also had smug marks all over it
The battery of the hard disk is not good for iPhone X charging
well i opened it up anyway and to my disappointment the product was scratched like deep gouges down the side of the product and also had smug marks all over it
I read all the reviews, both negative and positive, and like most decided to take the gamble any way
I read many reviews on this product before purchase and I must admit I was about skeptical due to all of the negative reviews.
I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to give you a good technical review of this item.
And looking at the options if I purchase one (and I very well may) will go for the 4T version as the price differential for another 3T is not that much.
Having 4TB is amazing but the weight along with the other things I complained about makes it useless to me.
My 4TB drive crashes, reboots, and has lost me 2TB of backup data
The device is bulky, but with all of the features it has, especially the 3TB size (my Seagate tops out at 2TB), I see it as worth it, but unfortunately not being able to connect with it on a consistent basis makes it a massive deal breaker, and I will be returning it tomorrow.
Within that weight I have a dual WiFi source, 1TB hard drive, USB interface, SD card reader, and a battery
Great Decision! This portable external 1 TB Hard Drive is proving to be perfect for my photo outings.
If you hate wires and shoot a lot of videos on the go, are an avid traveler or a photographer, this will be your savior when your card runs out of space or you want to view your footage but your camera is out of juice
well i opened it up anyway and to my disappointment the product was scratched like deep gouges down the side of the product and also had smug marks all over it
The only thing that it worked for me as was as an actual wired hard drive.
The documentation is pretty skimpy and I gave up trying to figure out how to set it up with a hard-wire connection to my Windows PC.
And looking at the options if I purchase one (and I very well may) will go for the 4T version as the price differential for another 3T is not that much.
awfull, doesnt work very well, extremelly slow (minutes to read when disk is over 2TB, more than 10!), a lot of issues to use like external usb (file corruption, etc)

I know that a lot of folks had problems and I can see how it might have been difficult
The problem is it would, a lot of times stop copying along the process when transferring large files to the device on any one of it's radios, albeit slower on the 2.4Ghz
It doesn't get any easier than that!!It's got a 3.0 SD card slot to work with your camera (tho a lot of cameras are wireless now as well).
