No totally smooth surface that will allow this to stay mounted even with nothing attached to it.

As with any "sticky" tape, it's common sense that it should be placed on a smooth, clean and dry surface, otherwise it will not stick

Adhesive on the magnet requires the perfect surface.

Only problem I had was finding a flat vertical surface in my Jeep to stick it on.

The only problem with this sort of device is that so many vehicle dashboards don't give a smooth flat surface within arm's reach
