Overall, a nice affordable compact synth that's very portable
I'm finding that going "hands on" with this hardware synth is teaching me so much more in comparison to a soft synth!Heck, even some of the preset tones sound awesome to me (especially the wobble bass patch)!
You get what you paid for, and this synth is truly amazing, Buying an actual DX7 is pretty much the only other option if you want to get any closer to it's sound
The moment I touched the keys and twiddled the slidersof this beautiful synth i realised I was wrong.

The USB MIDI functionality and small size actually makes this an excellent midi controller as well as a high quality stand alone synth
I really can't see why anyone would want to pay a price like this when you can get more performance with an inexpensive midi keyboard connected to a computer
But it has a weird mini-DIN socket instead of proper MIDI jacks.
You can even just plug in the Reface to your laptop and have a compact MIDI controller all on its own if you wanted

Of the 4 REFACE units I am aware of, the CP initially seemed like the least exciting to me; as I have a lot of experience with classic 1 to 3 oscillator ADSR analog synthesizers as well as the famous DX7
(USB / MIDI / line outs / headphones out / etc)- Cool analog style
Incredible smooth analog sound (despite being digital under the hood)CONS- Retail price isn't cheap; for the same money, you can get a much more powerful device (but that is like saying you shouldn't buy a motorcycle unless you have a car; apples and oranges

The digital delay is "crisper" and keeps it's sharpness
Then I make choices regarding reverb, delay, modulation, etc
The analog delay is even better than the digital delay in my opinion
The sound is amazing: the ePiano sound is lovely, the FM synth engine gives you the best of the 80's sounds, and the built-in effect unit makes it sound even better (personally, I *need* a delay on a synth, and this machine allows you to have a complex dual delay)
Either delay is great for making droning space rock sounding stuff, it's really fun to play with
Super expressive, portable, incredible quality all around
I understand they wanted to make this line somewhat higher quality and not like a toy keyboard (it is definitely not a toy), but it can be hard to justify the price when software synths with lots of effects are almost free and sometimes included with a computer (like all Apple computers)
Even when used as sound module, audio quality is decent
My son did not like the quality.
Sound quality decent, but impossible to stabilize on lap

Yamaha Reface keyboards are designed around the practical needs of contemporary musicians
The name of the series, "reface," is a conflation of the idea of reimagining and the legacy of Yamaha's many groundbreaking keyboard instrument interfaces
Among the innovations that is hearkens back to are the legendary CP80, Yamaha Combo Organ and CS5 keyboards
This is the reface DX, which has as one of its chief orientations the bell pianos and broad digital synth library from the DX7
The reface series is small
Incredibly small
But unlike miniature keyboard instruments of the past, the reface touch is satisfying and expressive, and the sound is nothing short of spectacular
The reface family of keyboards features built-in speakers and is battery operable so you can create on the go
An aux line in allows you to play along with MP3 players or whatever other audio device you wish to use
Add MIDI and USB connectivity, and the preface's capacity to interface with external devices is vast
Reface DX goes retro 80s to cutting edge modern at the flick of a switch…literally! Capacitive multi-touch control puts powerful FM synthesis under your fingertips
Quickly edit, store and recall 32 of your favorite Voices with the onboard memory
Add final polish to your sound using the two onboard multi-effects
Got a quick idea for a song or just want to jam? The onboard Looper records your playing complete with “sound on sound”-style overdubs
You can even change or edit Voices while playing back the Looper - a great way to fine tune your custom Voices
For sound designers and keyboardists needing classic 80's to cutting edge EDM FM sound, Reface DX is a mini-key FM synthesizer based on the legendary DX7 featuring modern four-operator FM synthesis and dual effects processors
Unlike synthesizers with "me too" sound, Reface DX offers unique and complex synth sound that's only possible from Yamaha.
