This is the closest any company has come to capturing the sound of a tube amp via a solid state technology
I have owned several Fender and Marshall amps, both tube and solid state
I have an 'all tube' and a solid state fender amp, so they are what I'm accustomed to.
The Yamaha THR10 is a solid state guitar amp with stereo sound, built in effects, stereo outs, runs on AC or batteries and is about the size of a boombox
We all know that small amps, solid state amps and modeling amps all have been known for years to suck
Modulation effects were OK to get a rocktron sort of sound through the clean setting
FLAT sounds boring, but is extremely useful - this would be the setting you would us to plug an external device (synthesizer) or perhaps a preamp pedal like a Tech21 to use the THR10 more or less like a PA or power amp
If your looking for a spongy slightly over driven, touch sensitive tube amp sound, think of a vintage Deluxe Reverb with volume on 6, the Yamaha will do that with increased gain in the clean setting
I a/b switch this with a THR5X in the clean setting to get my channel switching done.
For practice in a sound sensitive setting, this little number is about perfect
so it won't put out enough volume for even a small band
Update: at louder volume there is a strong buzz
If you want a fantastic modeling amp to gig with at medium to loud volume, the Boss Katana 50 which I also own does everything the Yamaha does acoustically and more
The THR doesn't get massively loud, but it has enough volume to get way too loud for an apartment which is all you need in a practice amp
If you lower the volume and gain it will not shut down.
Could use more effects, but it's really great as a travel or office amp
I have a Fender Mustang II and all but a meager few of the amps are even half-way usable and all the effects sound cheap.
It sounds amazingly full and deep at low volumes, the cleans are great, the effects are decent, it tales my pedals pretty
Crystal clear and the effects that are built in are great
It has a built-in tuner, separate effects knobs with Delay/Reverb and Chorus/Flanger/Phaser/Tremolo, tap delay for tempo setting, and a handful of simple amp models that are high quality and extremely versatile.

Yamaha's THR-10 portable guitar amplifier gives you a huge range of guitar tone you can take anywhere
Check it out - Yamaha loaded the THR-10 with eight killer guitar amp models
It's got Clean, Crunch, Lead, Brit Hi, and Modern tube guitar amp models, plus modes for your acoustic guitar or bass and a bypass mode that turns its modeling off
And since all of its effects and amp models use Yamaha's amazing VCM (Virtual Circuitry Modeling) technology, this amp doesn't just sound like a massive tube amplifier, it FEELS like one too.
