For a great all around handheld recorder with excellent sound quality, lots of features, and a reasonable price, the Zoom unit is going to be very hard to beat.
But the recorder is very functional and does a great job with high-quality field audio, and the price is quite reasonable for the features/quality.
An excellent digital recorder at a fairly affordable price
You can not go wrong with this and the price is reasonable
Overall good, useful, feature laden tool at a reasonable price musicians should not be without.
I don't recommend this product to anyone who does anything fast paced such as weddings or events
The product itself is great, but it didn't work when I try to connect it with my computer as an Audio I/F!
The MAIN ting that sold me on the H4n over the cheaper but equally awesome zoom products is the XLR inputs that are phantom powered if you need it for condenser or other high-end microphones
Zoom has some great product, but this one stands on top!
I would recommend it highly recommended an excellent product
A whirring noise in the internal right MIC, reported also in internet by other users and so far with no solution reported, has made my newly bought Zoom H4N almost useless
Zoom knocks it out of the park with this one, and it's affordable too
The Zoom H4N works very well and perfect for making movies with audio.
I've used the Zoom H4N to record some music presentations and practices, and it works quite well.
The Zoom H4N works very well and perfect for making movies with audio.
This is great for ensuring your mics won't be easily damaged - but the device still suffers some handling noise; yet the noise seems to be much improved.
The XLR ports work great and are as clean as your mics allow
Of course you could blame the Reporter mic, but I suspect other dynamic mics may also have problems
Awesome sound quality, great mics, easy to use and very portable
But when you twist them, the mics are then a 120 degree angle
The H4N is the perfect portable stereo recording device!
Improved rubberized case that is easier to handle- Improved recording quality and noise floor (see below)But the MOST improved aspect of the new H4N Pro is the audio quality
but why is there a dedicated button for this on the face of the device when it will ruin a recording like this
Very portable, records silently with no hissing in recording
The top knobs rattle while recording but not if the recorder is stationary
For this type of session, I use the built-in stereo mics to capture un-mic'd sounds from the stage (drums, tambourine, misc noises from the props from on stage) as well as the sound of the auditorium
The built in mics are very useful, and the variety of input and recording options are great.
I'm just wondering why the built in mic's have no protection
The built in stereo microphones collect surrounding noise beautifully and amazed me the with how much they pick up
The built-in mics are actually half decent, but to my ear they suffer from the same strange EQ issue as the headphone
I thought it was a defective unit until I did some more research.
(At this point, because I was still having problems with the software installation, I didn't know whether it was a software problem; whether the card was defective; or whether the unit itself was defective.)
So perhaps a minor thing, but irritating because at first I thought I had a defective unit.
I like both this unit and the X-Y microphone configuration it uses
For the price you couldn't ask for a more powerful, more versatile unit
I wanted to start a podcast with a co-host which makes USB mics kind of a tricky thing to use
The built in mics are a little exposed without a wire cage on the top like others have, it would probably not be a good thing to drop this unit and have the mics
I'm a photojournalist, and for video and conferences, this thing is a killer
This thing isnt hard to figure out and if you have trouble there is some well spoken guy on youtube that gives detailed tutorials
I decided to pick this up and it is a great thing I did
If your environment is clean from noise your recordings will be as clear and perfect as you could ever dream
I highly recommend it for pros as well as for common audiophiles.
The H4nSP lost one star for the menu system when recording in a mode OTHER THAN stereo through the on-board microphones, not having a wrist strap even though there is a slot for it, and for not including the AC adapter
I want to be moderate and I subtract half a star at this time
This item is used extensively in a DSLR video shooting function, as well as for ambient field recording
Built in mic has good pickup but seems to record a lot of ambient noise also
I've recorded varied things like outdoor ambient noise, my kids singing at home, direct input guitar, tuba and euphonium, a euphonium quartet, and the band that I play in.(30 piece concert band

Not only will the quality be far better, but you will not have to worry about any ambient noises while you are transcribing the music (phones ringing, people talking, dogs barking, ambulances sirening...).
If your environment is clean from noise your recordings will be as clear and perfect as you could ever dream
This thing is packed with features and I think there's going to be a pretty steep learning curve as I figure out what all it can do and how best to utilize it.
If your environment is clean from noise your recordings will be as clear and perfect as you could ever dream
Still a relatively stiff learning curve as it will do a great many things that I don't need.

Second, the voluminous documentation is a massive waste of paper.
I highly recommend it for pros as well as for common audiophiles.
Both the lack of USB function and the documentation are nonsense.
The collective documentation promptly moves you toward the software's installation, omitting the fact that YOU DO NOT HAVE TO INSTALL Cubebase IN ORDER TO OPERATE THE UNIT.

There is a list of tested and approved SD/SDHC cards within that blog, however it is sorely outdated (2009)
(At this point, because I was still having problems with the software installation, I didn't know whether it was a software problem; whether the card was defective; or whether the unit itself was defective.)
I really like this digital recorder, writes directly to SD card and so easy to download and listen/copy/record on the computer.
BUT after 3 or 4 emails with Zoom Customer support, we had solved the problem (turned off the wireless card) and audio quality over the USB connection is excellent
I saved it on the hard drive but Windows is unable to play it
It IS possible to copy files via copy and paste using the cable to get them on your hard drive.
I'm a professional classical musician, and the zoom h4n is an excellent piece of equipment for self recording and transfers easily to hard drive for making audition CDs.
hard drive for audio by itself cost $1,000!My late 90's audiobook, "Exploring Music & Sound on Your PC" was hailed as one of the most complete introductions to digital audio ever found in one title
